I'm saying what he said is right. Call recording is not available because of local laws. OEMs are just complying with them.
Yes ! That is true. I received a couple of updates from my service provider.
UPDATE: I have received replies from Public Mobile who is a subsidiary of Telus, a major communications company. And they tell me it has nothing at all to do with them or their sim cards. They say that it is either a "feature" of a particular phone or "it is not enabled by the sim or the provider" So, as we all know, this is a Nothing issue !

Is the recording option in native Phone app dependent on version, device, locale, or all/other? I don't have that option on my Xperia 5 III, but it could be due to a different problem I'm trying to resolve atm. I really need this feature and have been using speakerphone+ external recorder, which is awful.

I've seen conflicting info about Android not allowing it, and would love to have a definitive answer (like everything lol). I may have to use a previous version for a little while if the restrictions are a major problem. In past I did have to try a few apps and settings ('source' or mic input options) though. It doesn't make sense that the local laws would be what they'd blame... but that doesn't mean anything I guess!

FYI in case it helps anyone, I recently had to look up the laws on this. Here in CO and many other states, the law is called "one party"- meaning only one person has to consent to recording (usually the person doing the recording obviously). This is also federal law I believe, though if your state is more restrictive (2/all party), that law prevails. In any case you must be sure the person on the other end is not in another state or whatever.
Of course I'm talking about being able to use the recording legitimately as evidence or whatever... just recording for your own use or notes....your call I guess 🤣. Btw this applies to phone, not in person or video, which I think is much more strict

Pretty much all major OEMs, except Samsung, have stopped providing their native dialers (with automatic call recording support) on their phones and replaced them with Google Dialer. This is because call recording has different laws in different jurisdictions, and since Google already makes one that complies with all regulations, they use Google Dialer instead to keep things simple, save costs and avoid litigations.

Also, Android 13 no longer allows 3rd party apps access to the call recording API. See details here:

This is why no 3rd party call recording app works properly in the newer Android versions.

Call Recording feature will show up only in jurisdictions which allow it legally, and these checks are built into the OS.

"This a reminder that Call Recording is unavailable on the downloaded version of Google Phone app.
To confirm which version of the Phone app you are using, check the application details."

Also contains a list of countries, and the USA is not included.

Being in Australia I have call recording enabled on my NP (1), but I have to manually record the call once it has started. The ridiculous thing is my Pixel 6A on the same carrier with the same version of Google Dialer does not support call recording due to the operator settings.

Start a recording from a call

Important: The first time you record a call, you’ll be advised you must comply with local laws related to recording calls. Many jurisdictions require consent by all parties to record the call.
To protect the privacy of all users, when you start recording, both parties are notified with a disclosure that the call is being recorded. When you stop recording, both parties are notified with a disclosure that the call is no longer being recorded.

  2. Make or receive a call.
  3. To record your call, on the ongoing call screen, tap Record
    Record
  4. To stop recording, tap Stop recording
    Stop recording

This article is extremely helpful, thanks. Now at least it's clear what is NOT going to work. The Google phone support article confused me.. but on the 'availability' page, USA is not listed anyway. Shame that google has so much control and opts to use it to limit functionality, even where explicitly legal.

How about a 2nd line app/voip etc? I haven't looked into that at all so I'm very uninformed.
I also am avoiding root for now, but may try either the not updating android (I'm about to perform reset anyway), or just some wired headset with inline recorder/splitter.
I just need to document specific calls for evidence and I don't have so much time or want to risk bricking my phone right now. Maybe it's just me, everything is getting more difficult and time consuming!

I'm curious to follow what others decide on this.

That sounds good but our goal is to make the built in recorder available. And it is in there !

If you root your phone. Problem solved.

It's simple as that: what about if the two parties agree to record? You just don't have the possibility.
It's the same as the knife. It could be used to harm but usually it's used on the kitchen. So what do we do? We should just use the forks?

They are oversimplifying the matter and in so doing they are doing wrong.

Leave it to me the responsibility to make the choice

The call Recorder I downloaded from Google Pay worked on my phone.

    Hello to everyone,
I hope someone could help me, i need to record any phone call that i make/receive, the phone should record the call without messages to the caller about the phone call is recorded.

Did someone can tell me how can i do this? i have seen that one option is to root the device but if someone have other suggestion is better for me than root the device.

I have also tried this app: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...cord-phone-calls-from-the-phone-line.1441643/ but use the microphone so sometimes there are very noise.

    Bye

Yes, I think that every android phone have this functionality, the problem is that phone app use CSC to enable o not, this is what I have understand
I also read that you can root the phone and use a magisk mod. But I'm not ready to root the phone just yet because it's still under warranty.

You could use MacroCroid. It can press the button for you and fill in the name for you too. You need a fair amount of time to set it up but it would work good.
Thanks for the tip! I thought the same and tried something similar yesterday (Tasker and another app, forgot the name) but gave up for the amount of time needed! :)
Going to try MacroCroid anyway, hopefully it's a little bit less complicate
    Thanks again

I wanted to thank you - it has worked and it's not been a nightmare!

I'm going to get in touch with Nothing head office and see what they have to say. I will report back with the outcome.
Nothing has gotten back to me very quickly. The matter has been escalated to the relevant department so they tell me. But the conversation so far suggests that the record option should be there on all nothing phones. We will have to wait and see as I wait for an update.
