Just got all the gapps working, all I had to do was install them normally then convert each to system files.

Is there an easy way to convert the apps to system files without Titanium backup pro?
Thanks,
Gary

UPDATE: Never mind, I just read through EMUSAN's great writeup on getting gapps working.

Ok, so I added the google app thanks to emusan's guide. I want to get market place working. I have an android phone at work (HTC). Without disturbing or screwing up what I did last night, can I get market place functionality by pulling off data or app off the HTC?
Thanks,
Gary

yep, you sure can, just follow my guide, but instead of downloading my pack use titanium backup on your HTC phone to get your own backups, then proceed the same way.

In fooling around with Titanium Backup (always unwise), I removed the "update" app, and now my e-ink screen doesn't work any more. Whenever I install things, I get a FC message from "ReaderService" occasionally.

Would anyone be willing to hook me up with the .apk(s) for the "Update" program?

Alternately, could I pull them from the "update.zip" formerly hosted by Entourage?

Edit: Found the update.zip and pulled "EsiUpdate.apk" and "EsiUpdateNow.apk" out of it, installed them both, and now I have my e-ink reader back. *whew!*

I just ordered one of these yesterday after finding out my friends girlfriend has one. She let me play with it for awhile and man I can see the potential for this device. I can't wait to get mine so I can start tweaking with it.

I'm actually working on a custom ROM for my HTC Hero CDMA but I might put that on hold once I get this and see what type of development I can pull off with it. I hope more people chime in this thread so we can attract attention to developers and perhaps get some custom roms/apps/themes for our PE.

The community on these forums has been dead for awhile now. You will probably want to check out the mobileread edge sub-forum here: link. Unfortunately the possibility of a custom ROM is quite low, as entourage never released source for their e-ink apps, so any new ROM would have to be based on work on devices like the Kindle, and other things with the same e-ink controller. On top of that there is the problem of the CPU being extremely closed source, no one has yet been able to find more than some Assembler debug commands, and even those are a bit iffy.

That said I've been away from the community for a bit more than a month now for personal reasons, so things might have changed. I would just recommend looking around those forums to get started, there are tons of topics and posts that should help you do pretty much whatever you want(within reason of course lol). I might get back to working on this device soon, I've got some ideas of how to get various features working, but just not nearly enough time right now.

ALL google apps are now working correctly. FYI, I learned through the process that if you have to register through the youtube app, Gmail might not sync correctly and you may have problems with the market. This made my pocket edge 10000x more valuable...so give it a try!

I'll try to explain how I did it, I made so many changes it's hard to be sure what the fix was.

To do this the way I did, you will need a rooted phone with the 2.2.1 version of Google apps. This might work with another version of Gapps? Hopefully someone can find an easier method.

On the phone:

1) Convert all google apps to "User Apps" available in Titanium Backup Pro 3.8.1 by long pressing on the app and scrolling to the bottum. I'm not sure which files made it work, but GoogleServicesFramework and Vendor are important. I also did NetworkLocation, MarketUpdater, Gmail, Youtube and the rest.

2) Backup all google apps + data to mini SD card.

On the pocket edge:

1) Put mini SD card in edge and restore all google apps + data. You will need the pro version of Titanium Backup to use the fast install method. This was the main reason I used Titanium Backup was that some of the required files failed on using the package manager.

2) Now, convert all those installed user apps on the edge BACK to system apps. VERY important, took my awhile to figure this out. I suspect that google apps have to be system apps to work correctly.

3) Give it a try, if Market gives you an error, reboot and wait for a network to be connected, then try again. Go to the next step only if you have issues with it. You should be able to set up your google account through Market or GMail.

4) I also did the "Market Fix", which involves changing your build.prop with Root Explorer to include "ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2/FRF91/43546:user/release-keys" A tutorial is found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-861044.html We might be able to find a fingerprint that more closely matches the edge?

Some of the apps still won't install (like Angry Birds), I suspect this is a hardware problem.

The titanium method may not be necessary if anyone wants to copy the gapps apks to the /system/app folder with root exploer and use another method to make it work.

Good luck everyone!!!

Brian...Im confused by convert to system app...My TI says convert to user app but not system...

Entourage Pocket Edge Video/Audio Sync

Hey guys, newbie here.

I got 3 tablets and have been working on them from the posts I've read but for some reason I can't get some videos to play properly. The video is either too slow or the video and audio are out of sync. Can anyone help, is there there a specific video format, a audio codec. something??? I upgraded to 2.2 and I have flash player lite, Help Thanks.

I picked up one of these and for the money, these things kick ass. I managed to get it rooted quite simply via adb but I can't get Google Market to work no matter what I do. I even edited build props and other files to try to manipulate it but to no avail. If anyone wants to seriously work on this awesome little device, I *MIGHT* be able to actually pick up a used one for a SERIOUS developer that wants to help get this device a proper customized ROM. Please send me a PM and let me know but ONLY if you're serious.

I'm willing to do this because I'm really impressed with what this little thing can do. It's outstanding and for the money it's definitely worth it. I know they either released or are releasing the source code according to the GPL Licensing. I'm only a mediocre dev but I KNOW with the talented devs we have here at XDA we can get a full fledged custom ROM for this device making it that much cooler.

I appreciate the reply. I'm going to check out those forums and see what I can come up with. I've already got it rooted so that's a bonus. The only thing I need/want is the Google Market so I'm going to try the method posted in this thread and see what I can do. If I have Market and root, I think that's all I really need. I can wait on working on a ROM until we get more info. I did notice that they aren't really releasing much about certain aspects of this tablet. They had to release some info as per the GPL license but that's all I've found so far. :( Let me know if you get a little extra time and perhaps we can all collaborate on a ROM project for this. I think it's worth it personally since this device is pretty damn cool considering they are under $100 now. Keep me posted if you wouldn't mind.

I think we need to assemble a team to work on this so we can come up with a custom ROM. The problem, as mentioned in this thread, is that they are pretty tight lipped about some of the source codes on this device. That is going to make it much more difficult because we're pretty much guessing and digging for answers. I personally have much time since I own and operate a Network Security Firm where I live and I work crazy hours especially lately. I will keep you posted as to what we can come up with and who we can get to start a "team" so we can all collaborate together. Fingers crossed.

yeah, I would like to work on something like that, but as I said I'm really busy right now(I just started college, dual major in Electrical Engineering and Physics), and on top of that I really don't see it as being all that possible without any useful sources to go on(the one's you mentioned are useless in terms of the actual OS and e-ink unfortunately, and there are no sources for other devices with similar chip-sets). That said if you do manage to find something let me know and I'll see if I can help at all.

The main reason I left originally was due to some hostility from the community(it was only one or two people, but at the time I had no need for it and just left). I was planning on getting back into it but then college started and I had no time left.

Good luck!

What I have done is built a bootable Clockworkmod sd card and I have the uImage and uRamdisk image from the android device that i stripped from the ermine update available for it. Those files have been placed on the SD card and now I have to get ClockworkMod too boot but natively the android doesnt boot the SD card image...

How can I boot clockworkmod from this script??
This is what I am thinking but im not sure if it will work...

mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 - the SD Card
ADB SHELL
fastboot boot /dev/mmcblk0p1/uIMage [ /dev/mmcblk0p1/uRamdisk ]

Would this do the trick and boot me into clockworkmod??? Is there a lot more that needs to be done

I appreciate any help yall can provide

Thanks

Ok IM getting closer and closer to a solution but the closer I get the more snags i find...

The solution i need to implement involved building checks in the init.rc for a multi-boot.

Essentially...We need to create init.rc to boot/mount the SD card if a boot image exist else boot/mount the standard filesystem

From everything ive heard a timeout will need to be put in place when booting the SD because it takes a little bit of time to mount....

Now my solution to getting this all coded out is simple...I wanted to extract the nook color init.rc and compare it to ours...Pulling out the information to setup the check/ifs to do so...So here is the problem...I run windows and so far have not been able to find out how to unpack/replace the ramdisk image files so I can edit the init.rc......also seemed to lost the website i had open with my ifs.....ugh....Ive been up for over 36 hours and working on this most of the time...Im about to go crazy!!!!

So who is gonna help me??? lol Come on peeps this is for all of us....I can feel clockwork mod in my grasps....I hope...Ive read a **** ton and learned a **** ton since last night.....

added zip with both ramdisks

I posted an update to fix market on the PE.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18128957

Please try it out and let me know how (if?!?) it works.

Thanks!
I've tried just about every suggested method I could find to get Market and Talk working. I'm on rooted 2.2, so I started at step 11.

Your method worked perfectly, after the update and reboot, I still had 2.2, all my apps and files were still in place, my root was still intact, and all my google apps were working, including the most important, talk and market. Plus, I see my calendar is now syncing to my google calendar.

So, thanks for providing the first method that worked for me, and an easy to install one to boot!

it's just an ext2/3 filesystem iirc. just have to mount it via loopback.

I'll diff them fo you whne I get a chance, but if you get antsy you can always download virtualbox and install an ubuntu vm to develop on. That's how I do it :)

    How To Guide

I've posted a full description of the procedure for getting the Android Market to work on the Entourage forums. Once again, thanks to brianb5010 for figuring this out! Right now, the process requires having another rooted Android device with access to the Market.

    Here's the link:

Checking in too, I got mine yesterday and am very excited about the device.
What I was able to establish quickly is that most 2.2 apps will work out of the box on the Pocket Edge (I made apk backups of my apps on my N1, copied them onto the SD card of the Pocket Edge and voila, I had most of my favorite apps :)

I would be specifically interested in knowing how to access the e-ink screen programatically. Seems that the current apps focus mostly on the LCD screen.

Just rooted mine. :) It was super easy. I downloaded the z4root app from the Amazon App Store and clicked Permanent Root. Et voila!

Now to install AdFree Android and Ti Backup. They make Android life so much easier.
