I can not use the app now, because I am now on kitkat. But, what I think, is that it is a rather big app, installed it is about 4mbs, for an app with no gui. And also, there is also a app that does what yours, it is "MT GPS EPO Fix" ad works as it should. What is needed, imo, is a small app that does this, but also has a schedule capability. Only my opinions my friend! :)

Of course you have some points. As it's made with tasker I'm not able to take out anything to make it smaller.
One reason I'd use this is because of the speed and lack of ads... think minimal design :p
I've moved the temp download location from the SDCARD to the /data/data folder so you might be able to use it in KitKat if you want to give it a try.

I can't do anything about the size... but now you can schedule ;)

Nice try mate. Is there an option for weekly or monthly, or just daily? You know, epo files are valid for one month. It is not necessary for daily updates.

Ok, got you. Just tested it. Works ok!

One thing thought. Why do you need access at phone numbers/provider?

I just installed XPrivacy to check myself. It looks like the permissions in there doesn't correspond to the normal APK permissions as it is more granular ie. shell access. My app uses shell access but it is not one of the categories in play store.
Below is the only permissions in the manifest:
#android.permission.DISABLE_KEYGUARD
android.permission.RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED
android.permission.WAKE_LOCK
android.permission.INTERNET
android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
I can only think that the provider items that you see in there could be spare capabilities of the Tasker Scheduler.
I don't use them in the app myself. :)

Good morning eben80 and everyone. I have to say, that your app works as it should! I installed in my cellphone, everything is ok and I think that now it locks even faster.

Thanks again, I will rate your app in playstore. Keep up your good work!

This very small EPO updater app (48 KB) works perfectly :

    Final solution?

Thanks to a tip from @ultrasound191, we now have a different source: the current EPO files can be found at

    epodownload.mediatek.com/EPO.DAT
    epodownload.mediatek.com/EPO.MD5

Just tried it, and it works perfectly - no delays, and files are always up to date. Cheers!

    FTP server: epo.mediatek.com
    Port: 21
    Login: epo_alps
    Password: epo_alps

    There are two files:
    EPO.DAT
    EPO.MD5

Both files are updated on the server once per day, usualy around 7:51(GMT+2).
They should be downloaded to the folder: /data/misc .

When you try to download them from phone "EPO settings", you see message "EPO FILE INFO DOWNLOADING", than you see (50%). That 50% status appears and disappears around 3 times, and some time after that you receive error message "Download files invalid".

The reason is, that they have always wrong MD5 checksum in file EPO.MD5. So your phone download and compare/calc checksum for few times, but every time the checksum is incorrect. And that is reason, why it is not working.

I have tried to connect to the epo.mediatek.com ftp server manually from PC. Every time i download EPO.DAT file, the MD5 checksum is the same, but in EPO.MD5 file is another one (also still the same).
I have calculated correct MD5 checksum, and changed it to correct value to the file EPO.MD5. Than I have uploaded both files to my private FTP server. And than, through "Engineering Menu" (you can enter there by calling number *#*#3646633#*#* and then select "EPO" item) in the phone I have changed FTP connection/login/password to my server, and tested that. And when I have there correct MD5 checksum in file EPO.MD5, everything works as it should be.

So someone should tell Mediatek, that they have some serious problem with MD5 calculation on their FTP server.
