Weve only just managed to get root, i wouldnt hold out hope for a custom kernel just yet.

At the moment, the Y550 isnt even listed on the Huawei website so its not possible to download the rom for it yet, so until the original source for the Y550 is released i very much doubt there will be any custom roms or kernel. There is the source Rom for the G620 which is very similar, but no custom kernels yet.
Hi,

Thanks a lot for your "How To" that i translate in French on Frandroid.

I guess I find stock rom (version B239SP01) on german site Android Hilfe. I can't post this url because i've just registered on xda.
But with keyword B239SP01 on google, it's the first link.

Best regards

I also came from S2. My S2 died and was on a budget, and actually this spec wise is very comparable.

Yes, the firmware linked is the stock B239SP01 firmware for the Y550

Rom File: Link

The zip file containts instructions:

4.1 Normal upgrade
Step 1. A MICRO SD card of 2GB or more should be available. The MICRO SD card made by Sandisk, Kingstone, or Kingmax is recommended.
Step 2. Format the MICRO SD card (This operation is optional).
Step 3. Copy the Software: main package file UPDATE.APP to a directory named dload.
Step 4. Copy the entire dload folder (with UPDATE.APP in it) to the root directory of the MICRO SD card.
Step 5. Insert the MICRO SD card into the handset and power on. After entering the home screen, press Updates ->System updates -> Local update to start the upgrade. Reference to the following pictures

Step 6. When the progress bar stop, the phone will restart, if not you need to remove the battery manually.

6.1 Notes 1
To make sure that the power of the battery is enough to run the upgrade process. Maybe you can connect the handset with the charger or the USB data cable to provide power.
6.2 Notes 2
Upgrade operations will erase the user data, so if there is something very important, recommend you to backup them.

I managed to DeOdex the stock ROM using the tutorial found here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2725930

I know by itself it may not be useful but I know that a DeOdexed ROM is required for things such as theming and is useful for custom ROMS so I thought I'd share.

The update is a scam.

If you look at the YouTube in the guy's browser you can tell it is from years ago.

Not to mention the exact same comments are on every single website the video is embedded on.

HI all,

Many thanks to this forum as I now have my Y550 rooted and with CWM recovery installed.

But as "Dimspace" said the version of CWM linked to has the backup/restore section in Chinese, which is extremely hard to navigate. Does anybody know of a working version for the Y550 that is fully in english, please?

Thanks in advance.

I just bought this phone, haven't been able to root yet (need bootloader unlock code) but I have been collecting all the files available.

There seems to be 2 suitable CWM versions, one in a RAR file and one as a zip file. Maybe these CWM versions are identical (just in different packaging) but you can try.

The one in the instructions by dimspace is the RAR file, and I assume has the chinese.

The other is from Android-Hilfe.de and is a zip file: http://translate.googleusercontent....n.html&usg=ALkJrhjikCT_d99daEuupZzbTTZmHXdgug
Use at your own risk (of course).. the original poster states: The CMW Recovery actually comes from the G620s but can also be used on the Y550 partitions are identical.

Fast bootloader unlock code for Y550

Thanks dimspace this method worked for me - I'm now rooted!

However, I'd like to suggest a slight change to your guide. I was waiting for a while for my bootloader code by email but found this guide.
(Sorry - no link because I'm a new user)... en.club.vmall.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=30795
Simply replace 'C8812' with 'Y550-L01' and fill in the other information (as outlined by dimspace) to get the bootloader code instantly and then continue to follow dimspace's guide.

Thanks for that, but those two CWM's are the same unfortunately, (chinese in the backup/restore menu).

A simple and instant way to get your bootloader unlock code is to follow the instructions here.........
http://mate7.net/ascend-mate7-bootloader-unlock/

Worked perfectly for my Y550.

How did you get the Y550 to show up in the list on the bootloader unlock page?
(At http://en.club.vmall.com/emotiondownload.php?mod=unlock&action=pre for those interested)

There is also a similar page at http://emui.huawei.com/plugin.php?id=unlock&mod=detail

The Y550 doesn't show up in the list for devices for me for on both these pages. I even tried the page "inspect element" modification to trick the system into producing codes for phones not on the list (see http://en.club.vmall.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=30795).

Is the Y550 in the list for you?
[Edit: I got my product code using the *#*# command on the phone. Will your method give a different product code?]
[Edit2: sorry, didn't see the previous poster above already listed the bootload unlock site]
[Edit3: I have the L02 version of the Y550, maybe that is the problem?]

I'm not being smart or anything, but did you read/follow the instructions given at
http://mate7.net/ascend-mate7-bootloader-unlock/

If you did then you would have seen that you do NOT try to use/input Y550-L01/2/3 as the model (as you can't) but rather use Y300-0000 and use the product ID generator linked to on the page to generate the product ID (for a Y300-0000) and then input the serial and IMEI of your own phone.

Try this.. If this doesn't work try the pc app of it.. And if that doesn't work then your screwed. :D
Rubbish !!

.. SNIPPED..
(removed the evidence of my inability to read..)
OK, ignore most of what I said above (I need to RTFM!).

Just to be clear for others, the bootloader unlock instructions by Sparkrite worked for me too.. the Windows software unlock generator creates a different product ID from the one you get from the phone itself. Use the generator code with Y300 in the Huawei web site and it works perfectly. Phone now unlocked.

I did discover there must be a limit to the number of phones you can unlock in one day, because I have two Y550s and only the first one unlocked. The second one didn't work, and when I tried to re-enter the first one, Huawei wouldn't cough up the code again. Maybe tomorrow..

Thanks again to Sparkrite for that link and instructions.

Try clearing your cache and/or reset your router/modem to change IP (assuming you do not have a static IP).

See if this works to allow you to generate the unlock code for your second Y550.

Chinese CWM menu options

Does anyone know the menu options to make CWM backups go to the SD card and not internal phone memory?

I had a very brown trousers moment when I tried to make a backup and it filled the internal memory.. and then stopped the phone from being able to boot. Thought I had bricked it (especially after clearing cache and data, with still no reboot).

Deleting the backups from within CWM fixed the problem. Phew!

From what I can work out the top menu "Backup and Restore" leads to these second level options:
1) backup image
2) restore image
3) delete image
4) restore -> with options
5) backup (to SD?)
6) restore (from SD?)
7 delete image from SD?
8) restore -> with options from SD?

Can anyone confirm or correct these?

SrsRoot didn't work for me (even after unlocking bootloader)! I am still waiting for a OneClick method!
Unfortunately there is no "one click root" at the moment, but thanks to Dimspace there is a method of rooting.
Just re-read this thread to find/see it.

BTW Unlocking the boot loader does not directly allow rooting, but does allow you to install a recovery with options to flash a method to obtain root privileges. Which is what Dimspace has quite clearly previously documented.
