Yes! thanks. It totally blows my mind that VZW can legally get away charging a monthly fee for a built in phone feature.
Because when you tether, you're making use of a second data plan that does not at all count against your main one, so you have to pay for that, too. /s

Just kidding, it's because they're greedy. US Cellular, and probably others, do it too. Completely stupid. But that's why we root our phones. And, why I think what Motorola is trying to do, with the Moto X Pure, by selling phones directly to consumers, is so important. Sure, it's $400 to start, but if you want a Samsung Galaxy or iPhone two storage sizes higher, you're paying $400 on contract. Or a Samsung Edge or iPhone Plus with one storage size higher. There are people paying $500, $600 for a phone after subsidy! So for Motorola to sell the whole phone for $400, and get out from under carrier involvement... I really hope it works out well and others join in.

Soon as I have time to do the m8's in my house

Awesome news, thanks dottat!

Will you again make an install so it doesnt overwrite data as you did with the 5.0.1? This last one you did worked so smooth and perfect: I ran it over 4.2, reinstalled twrp, reinstalled SuperSU, and everything remained intact and perfect!

This system update ready notification popup is also driving me crazy! :)

Thanks again for all your hard work!

**EDIT** I probably should have clarified:

I have a stock Verizon rom, S-Off, rooted, currently at 5.0.1 (thanks to your installer!), and you'd pointed me to your brilliant 5.0.1 installer here so as not to wipe my current data:

http://xdaforums.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/general/official-ruu1-55-605-2-t2883845

I was able to install that 5.0.1 without wiping any of my data, then I reinstalled TWRP and SuperSU, and was updated from 4.2 to 5.0.1 without losing any programs or data.

Will you be making a similar install to get the latest update push without wiping any data? I don't mind reinstalling TWRP and SuperSU, simple compared to wiping the entire phone! :)

If I'm missing something obvious here, feel free to slap me and point me in the right direction. I understand the one in this thread will wipe the phone completely, and am hoping there is another install which is similar to the one referenced above, it was absolutely brilliant

I've read over fifteen pages of this thread. I'm still a little unsure of a few things.
I've got two stock phones with 4.4.2 that I just used sunshine to s-off and rooted with the developers root tool thanks to advice on here by dottat and other members.

Can I just use the exe to to update my phones since it's on 4.4.2 or do I need to take other steps first?
Is the exe the best option?

This is a little advanced for me, usually just root and use titanium backup. So I don't want to mess this up.

The only thing you may have to do is flash the hboot zip posted in the op first. You can flash that zip using fastboot or the SD card method. Once you complete that you can download the latest ruu zip or exe and flash that.

Uploading it right now...

You, sir, are the MAN!!! Thank you VERY much for all you do, and will follow up with my success!!

**EDIT**

Success!! Thanks again for keepin' our M8's alive and current!! I'll shoot you another donation shortly.

In the meantime, any idea how to get rid of this damn "System Update Ready" window that keeps popping up? Tried clearing dalvik/cache and it just re-optimized all my apps.

I checked and the system is reporting 4.17.605.9. I tried "System Update/Check new" thinking it would re-initialize and see it's current, but no luck.

I just keep hitting the back button instead of either of the "Install Now" or "Install Later" buttons.

I'm thinking if I hit "Install Now" and let it run, it will fail when it gets to TWRP, do a re-check, see it's current and STFU, but I am sitting perfect right now and don't want to screw anything up, so I haven't taken it or delayed it yet.

Any assistance would, as always, be met with eternal gratitude. ;)

Otherwise, everything went perfect; Updated, TWRP'd, and SuperSU'd, didnt lose a thing!

**EDIT 2**

Resolved the System Update Ready issue. Got antsy and figured it would fail at TWRP, so I hit Install Now.

It failed immediately with unsuccessful, and I hit OK.

Went into System Update/Check new and it then phoned home and said "good to go, you're already up to date" (not in those words...).

Problem solved!!

Thanks again dottat, you are incredible and all of us who own an M8 owe you a debt of gratitude. I'll get another donation to ya in a bit, making dinner now.

Thanks for the advice and the RUU. This should be just what we need to use Titanium backup to get our stuff off the motorolas and on the M8s

I got the hboot zip installed and the standalone ruu and everything seems good so far. The only thing is I didn't install TWRP. I didn't realize I needed it to install the tweaks. How do I install twrp now that the phone has rebooted? Or do I need to reinstall the full RUU? Do I need to rename TWRP zip to install?

You can rename the twrp zip just like you did with the run and reboot to boot loader and let boot loader flash it. Once your phone boots up delete that zip as it will make it hard to enter recovery. The free app quickboot will work perfectly to reboot to recovery from within the os.

I've read a lot in this thread as well as this other thread, and maybe it's just me, but I'm not clear on what I need to do to install the latest OTA update (which I believe is the stagefright patch) in my situation. I'd prefer the easiest method (whatever that is), and it's my understanding that I can't do an OTA update due to the current status of my phone, which is as follows:

Android version 5.0.1 (stock, rooted)
S-OFF
TeamWin Recovery

I'm sorry if my question has already been answered, I just want to make sure that I'm totally clear on what I need to do so that I don't screw up my phone. :)

Flash the s-on one and and then simply flash twrp and the latest supersu.zip to reroot. That way you don't have to wipe. The one in this thread is pre-rooted but will wipe your phone.

Thank you, dottat. So the S-ON will not affect my phone's S-OFF status? And is the 5.0.1 RUU zip with stage fright patch listed in this thread the correct one?

As many of you are aware, flashing roms to our phone comes with risk. That risk is dimished by the availability of an RUU for our phone.

I have made this available as a standalone APP (.exe) for PC use as well as a SINGLE zip file for SD card loading.

This is for s-off users only. I repeat...s-off only.
This WILL wipe your phone (internal memory). IF you are able...backup data prior to using this. This works EXACTLY like an RUU for s-off users. Two options exist for using this zip. This will land you on STOCK yummy lollipop :) 5.0.1 pre-rooted with stock recovery.

NOTE...This is a COMPLETE single file solution. No stickers file needed.
IF you get PU failed for data partition you need to factory reset from hboot and re-run the RUU. This means the RUU could not write to your data partition like it should have (size is wrong or encrypted etc)...

if you ever end up on the android 4 ! screen simply fastboot flash the hboot.img to clear the error state. Our phones go into this protect mode when a partition fails to update and it will NOT clear until it successfully flashes a zip.

Please download and flash the L hboot from here.

    .

    Option 1

Rename file to 0P6BIMG.zip and Copy 0P6BIMG.zip to root of a physical SD. No exfat! No internal storage!

Reboot phone to bootloader and follow prompts once RUU is detected by phone.

    Option 2 (App/EXE)

Download file. Double click. Wait a couple minutes for it to extract and it will install supporting files automatically. Then follow the onscreen prompts to flash RUU.

    ## expect a good 5 minute plus first boot!
You CAN use the app flashify (free on google play) to flash custom recovery of your chosing.

Optional If you wish to flash a custom recovery before leaving RUU mode you can. This is helpful if you have relocked for any reason as you CAN flash a recovery using this method while locked (since s-off). Download the ruuM8TWRP_2_8_7.zip below and place it in your working fastboot/adb directory. Once in place, issue the following command.

    fastboot flash zip ruuM8_TWRP_2_8_7L.zip

    ##example output

Once completed you can issue the command "fastboot reboot-bootloader" to return to hboot so you can enter recovery.

Many thanks to @Sneakyghost for sharing the fuu for the cause!!

Excuse my lack of knowledge but I haven't used an update file like this through TWRP. I've used hboot plenty but whats the difference? And if I choose to use the TWRP route do I keep my data and custom rom that is installed.

the TWRP is for flashing back TWRP in RUU mode. After flashing either the full zip or the exe you will likely want to get back to TWRP from stock recovery. You can use the TWRP zip to do that -or- since rooted use the free app flashify on the app store to flash TWRP back to your device.
    5
Is it just me or are there no files for flashing or adb? I might also be an idiot, so I apologize. I see a TWRP zip and an apk for HTC backup.

We are just waiting on AFH right now.... gotta love it...

    Hey mate,
I have further refined the FUU packages to include the VCRedist, which usually comes with HTC Syncmanager and is required by ARUWizard.
I also have this saved into WinRAR profiles for my different FUU's and RUU repacks and whatnot.
Just let me know if you want profile exports for your FUU and the resource folders to go along with them.

    You can have it.
You know where to find me :D
