Is there a way to remove the navbar but keep the status bar without using custom ROM or apps? Such as edit in build.prop?

GMD Softkey Hide.

These guys do good work. HOWEVER I myself would highly reccomend a custom rom if this matters to you. It's something that drives me nuts, and its just so well integrated into paranoid android. But this will do the trick for ya.

You can recompile the framework.apk to get rid of the soft buttons on a stock rom.
