I am BEYOND pissed off right now.

I just installed the latest Swiftkey beta and after downloading the apk my phone rebooted. I thought it was weird that the beta required a phone reboot. Upon rebooting I landed in CWM which is also weird. CWM asked me if I want to install from zip (not apk) and I said yes. And right after beginning the installation I realized what I had done by not paying attention.

At this point I was too worried about restarting mid-instal for fear of bricking my phone. Lo and behold I have Knox and 4.3. UGH! I don't know how this happened.

Anyway, when I boot into recovery CWM is gone and I have the warranty bit counter. But how do I tell if I have root? During the process CWM asked me if I want to maintain root so I said yes. I tried several root checkers and all say I am rooted. However, Holo Root Check has several options. It tells me I have Root and BusyBox installed. However, when I click the button to "check for root access" it tells me "Root access has not been granted" so am I still rooted or not?

Also, off topic but I was wifi tethering with WiFi Tether TrevE Mod which no longer works. Anyone know if there is an alternative that will work with 4.3?

EDIT: I discovered an app called WiFi Tether Router that is supposed to allow WiFi tethering for a rooted phone. I downloaded it and it tells me that I'm not rooted. WTF!?!?!? Even if I'm stuck with Knox is there a way to reroot?

why I hate cwm...always warned me about losing root do I want to fix it blah blah...philz recovery is simply awesome...but to answer you, root checkers say you're rooted right? if so, do you have supersu installed and have its su binary updated? if not, get it from the playstore, install it and open it, update the binary via normal and reboot...it MAY ask to disable Knox IF you are rooted and Knox isn't disabled. if you still get problems and you are on 4.3 stock rom, click on my rooting guide and root your phone again my way and I GUARANTEE you'll be golden and thanking me

that cf auto root method posted above barely works and if you're on a stock rom and wanna just unroot it, go into supersu and in its settings there's an option to 1 click fully unroot your phone...just fyi

Pittsburgh Pa,
CNexus, I was reading up on gtan64 thread for fixing hard bricked phones and was wounding if you have to use the stock tar file that you had when someone bricks there phone? Would it be possible to hard brick on 4.3, follow his directions and Odin back to 4.1.2 to remove the Knox bootloader?

No, it's been tried. If you were on the 4.3 bootloader when you bricked, then you need to 4.3 bootloader files to unbrick

Same with 4.1.2...can't interchange the files

Hello everyone, quick question

I am on Samsung's android stock android version 4.3 that I flashed using odin and it has knox on it with the counter 0x1.

Would I be able to flash cyanogenmod 11 with android 4.4 on it without a problem? And then could I go back to my current 4.3 stock rom if I wanted to? Or flash 4.4?

Thank you

Verizon compared to other S3s

That is my understanding. There should now be an extra line of info, I think at the bottom, which will show Knox 0x0 or 0x1 if you have that bootloader installed (my condolences if that is the case!); 0x0 means you haven't tripped the flag, and 0x1 means it has been tripped, permanently.
I'm reading this thread over to get a better understanding of Knox. I've just booted into download mode to check the last line and here's what the last TWO lines say:
"Warranty Bit: 0
BOOTLOADER AP SWREV: 1"

On rebooting I get the "custom +Unlocked icon"

The type is so tiny that I am not 100% certain about that. the "0" looks almost like it could be an "8".

However, I am on a Verizion S3. (d2vzw_i535) and it is my understanding that Verizon's phone differs in significant ways from all other S3s. In any case, I got the 4.3 update after having been rooted and experimenting with custom ROMs in November and early December,, 2013. After the "update" following the Verizon thread on the 4.3 update I accidentally bricked my phone while using safestrap. Eventually I found a thread on unbricking the Verizon S3 and was able to make my phone function once again. In fact the stock ROM is working very well. Battery life is awesome compared to the time I had the "accidental update" and I have been able to root my device. Next I plan to debloat it by getting rid of much of Samsung and Verizon's bloat.

I'd be interested if anyone can "translate" those last two lines from my Odin download mode. Also the bit about the custom Unlocked icon.

Please define "bricked". Are you able to boot your phone, charge it, or is it completel dead? Or...did you simply lose your root?

Added a note to the OP.

No way to remove bootloader Knox ATM.
Is it possible with jtag? This post covers how to recover from the knox brick using a riff box, but it is unclear as to whether restoring a pre knox backup will just unbrick and allow download, or if it will actually revert the bootloader. It mentions specifically that the warranty counter is imposssible to reset, but not knox itself.

knox back to stock Sprint

Hi,

I rooted and installed CM11 and I now have this knox. I know because it says "warranty bit 1" in dl mode. I need to be on a stock Sprint rom in order to activate the phone at Ting. I obv. don't want to brick and have a paperweight. How would I go about this?

Thanks,
Mike

If you read the OP it tells you exactly what you need to know. I quote:
Can I downgrade while on 4.3? You can flash roms no matter what Android version they are. That is perfectly fine. But you cannot downgrade the bootloader if you have the Knox bootloader, or else it will cause your bootloader to become corrupted and give you a fancy paperweight. Again, for those who DO NOT have the Knox bootloader, you needn't worry about this/downgrading firmware since the Knox bootloader is what prevents you from doing this. Downgrading your bootloader includes: attempting to flash full stock tar of software versions < MK3, etc.

I recently purchased this phone from Virgin Mobile to replace my Epic 4g Touch. I was wondering about this Knox boot loader. Is there a safe root/unroot method yet? And is it possible to reset the Knox flag with a jig like withe the Epic 4g touch?
