The Verge picked up on our problem and also reached out to Google. Maybe it will get things rolling.

https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/8/13/17683758/pixel-xl-android-9-pie-fast-charging-problems

Now Google has reopened the original issue ticket with the following statement:
Status: Assigned (Reopened)
Thank you for reporting this issue. We’ve shared this with our product and engineering teams who are investigating it further. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Android Police got a statement from Google and updated their story:

Google has provided us with the following statement:

"We're aware of an issue where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL after the upgrade to Android 9 Pie. The 18W rapid charger included in-box is a PD charger and does not exhibit this behavior. We are verifying a fix for non-PD USB-C chargers and will roll it out in the coming weeks."

It's not only with non PD, but at this moment I just want it to work again :)

New to this forum, just ordered my pixel xl, yeah I know very late to the party....
Has anyone tried to ascertain if there is a brand of charger that does work or a bunch that do not... aka is this possibly a manufacturer specific kind of thing? I know google is saying they will have it fixed but would be nice to know.

Those of you who say its working what chargers are you using... same for those its not working for.

I'm getting about 4 hour charge times currently with Pie. Something is definitely preventing a fast charge. It claims it is rapidly charging but I'm averaging about 750ma. If I turn off the screen it gets a bit better but not much. I have seen it climb to 3100ma with the stock charger, but that is really the exception. It seems thermally limited but even as my battery dips below 40C its still charging really slowly. On 8.1 it would actually increase charging power until the battery warmed up to about 42-43C and then back off while it cooled down to 40C. Wash, rinse, repeat. On Pie it just takes forever. It doesn't ramp nearly as aggressively. I am rooted but I don't think that makes a difference. The current beta of magisk seems to break the battery charging screen with the power off BTW. Trying it with safe mode right now and its claiming 2hrs to bring it from 50%-100%.

OK. Soooooo I looked into this some more today out of curiosity. I was wrong about my previous post. I just had to install ampere again and get better readings....

I'm running Android Pie here of course and I discovered that it has about the same thermal envelope as 8.1. If you are getting a consistent 750ma reading the device is too warm for quick charge to kick in. The battery HAS to be below 40C for it to ramp up to QC. Where it cuts off seems either arbitrary OR Ampere is not reading the sensors fast enough to show where exactly. I definitely suspect the latter. My guess is somewhere in the 44C range because I've seen it go to that before it drops back down to 750. If your processor is NOT idle it will easily go above the 40C mark and stay warm enough to where you will NEVER see QC. So if you are using your phone and keep checking and wondering why it is charging so slowly, this is why. Until it goes back down below 40C it will never kick in again. This is assuming you are correctly seeing the "charging rapidly" message on the lock screen. If it merely says "charging" it is not a PD compatible charger or your connection is not perfect in some way. Cleaning your USB port as well as the cable and even trying a new cable itself are good courses of action in that case. With a PD compatible charger it should say quick charging. My XL does with 3 chargers. The best buy insignia chargers are actually good replacements. I have one and it only delivers slightly less power than the stock. I think it maxes at 28W. It stays cool at max draw unlike cheap chargers that get alarmingly hot so it seems rather well built.

I *did* charge for a while in safe mode and it was ramping there so if it is working in safe mode, I would highly suggest uninstalling some apps and keeping your background CPU usage to less than 10% at idle. I'm also using an otterbox and obviously my phone cools at a slower rate than without. Still it seems to throttle the cpu about the same. I tested that one day. My point is that if you are using a case your mileage is going to vary and the battery temp should tell you exactly what is happening and why you are only drawing 750ma. I tested both the stock and elementalx kernels too and their behaviour was identical in terms of power delivery.

And this is a good thing. The Nexus 6p that I owned previous would easily juice the battery too hard and it was the temps that killed those batteries. I tether so my problem was made worse. Mine died after about a year with a fairly healthy battery to start out with. In the end the screen would literally stay on for about 5 minutes before I had a power sag. It was really bad. Probably the worst phone I have ever owned to be honest. Nice camera though. The slower your phone charges the longer your battery should last. I think the XL has plenty of battery to get through most days, but that's me.

I think if you are getting 2-3 hour charge times that seems perfectly normal. My Nexus 7 2013 has the same sized battery and takes almost 4 hours for what its worth.

PS. If you just charge overnight every night I would almost suggest an older USB compatible charger that only puts out like 1 amp or something. Then you can just slow charge and preserve the battery more. If your phone lives on a charger constantly you might want to look into limiting where it keeps the phone charged up to. Sitting at 100% all the time isn't good either.

This is really an unacceptable wait time for a critical feature fix. Most of my chargers are not OEM, but even the one that came included with my Nexus 6P no longer fast charges my Pixel XL. How the hell did they ever miss this?

I was pumped for Android P, but now I wish I hadn't upgraded. The gesture navigation is at best pointless and at worst less efficient, and the menu bar isn't even hidden or transparent netting you any additional screen real estate. So, I just switched back to the old menu bar, but I now need to spend more time tethered to a wall since most of my chargers are after market. Thanks, Google.

On the other hand, I'm really doing freaking cartwheels over the new animations and dropdown menu icons. I only wish this phone would be supported long enough that by the time Android S releases, the recycled Oreo icons and animations included in that build will seem new and fresh again.

I had to sideload full OTA to get the new update. It fixed this issue for me at last!!! Also, now I can rapidly charge on my PC via USB-C port from the PC!!! This was something that I lost since about March!!! Well done Google!!!
