Nope. You need to S-Off to do that.

You can do all that when your phone is in Recovery though. Using adb from command line (Qtadb for using adb through a graphical interface) or via using phone management apps like Android Commander, and so on.

You should always make a nandroid before messing with the system partition, then the chances of messing up don't matter because you can easily revert.

Now do you have r/w acces to the system partition while booted, cause you can't have it if your not S-off?
If you are S-off you can use root explorer to edit the system partition, if you do that you have to reboot before you can see the changes.

i do have r/w permissions with root explorer ...

my experience with nandriod back up is very bad ............

i tried to back up my system by going in recovery mode but my sd card then became read only and no app or data was visible and had a reformat ....

so i was unable to understand the back up procedure ....
do i have to make some kind of new partation on sd before proceeding to back up ........

i have installed latest updates via OTA
then rooted my device with unrevoked and s-off

now i do not know which recovery image should i have & neither know pvt version

i ran recovery mode and tried to make a back up of phone ( i believe i was creating a recovery image of my device )

but it resulted in a read only sd card and with no data visible on it ....

so had to factory reset phone and format the sd card

i do not know whats went wrong

now backing up sd card and will try again ,,,,,,,,,,,,

Turn the phone on holding volume down to get to HBOOT and right at the top it'll say the PVT version. If you're using a PVT4 Desire you need to use AmonRA as your recovery not CWM

You need to do some more reading, you posted that you had r/w access with root explorer, but now you say you're S-on. Of cures the changes won't take place if you are S-on (and therefore also DON'T have r/w to the system partition while booted).
As long as you are S-on use recovery and adb to move stuff from data to system.

i have re covered all steps ...

unrevoked root tool installs clockwork recovery version 2.05 .7

it has option to disable phone security ....
( so to my knowledge it will do s-OFF )

but my Hboot menu shows pvt1 and S-on

my root explorer can move files from system/app folder but reappear after reboot
i have also tried to remove system apps via titanium back up but failed ....

i tried to up date clockwork recovery to 2.5.1.8 via zip file but my current revoery won't read update.zip file from root of sd card.

so unable to understand my phone status that is it s-off or s-on

Unrevoked can only S-off CDMA Desires (CDMA means you don't have a Sim card, so if you have one you can't S-off with Unrevoked), you even post the your phone is S-on so I don't understand the confusion.
If you want to S-off use AlphaRev. Remember you are the only one responsible for your phone, no one else.

No idea, but it's better not to name your flashable zips update.zip because that gets messed up with your fake flash recovery image.
Just keep the name the file had and use "install zip form sd".

Also you cant flash a new recovery image from within recovery, but if you just rooted with Unrevoked there is no need to update your recovery image.
