Verizon sim is working! If it's straight up Verizon and not an MVNO, it should be easy to find settings posted online.
Someone in a post above me suggested unlockit.co.nz but they actually had the wrong apn for my carrier so your mileage may vary. I'm sure someone has a Verizon sim in an Android phone that can share the settings. If you get bars and an LTE symbol, I think you can get it to work. Even if you have to borrow someone's old android phone for 5 minutes to find it.![]()
Why????Yeah...I don't use sleep mode. I have the head unit turn off and then turn on. Takes me a minute to get going and it's all connected by the time I get going.
Hmmm, nice! How do you set it up to automatically start HotSpot when it connects to bluetooth? Is it through bluetooth tether? The extra cost through Verizon is a bit steep, $30 a month, $35 activation, $15 prorate charge, $12 taxes and fees. Total extra will be about $21 after those one time charges since I get half off added devices, but sheesh. It'll be worth it if it works as desired.I was using a MiFi device. It was OK but just an extra cost. I switched to using a hotspot on my phone, which is essentially a MiFi device with more functionality, and it's working well. I always have my phone with me, including when I take trips in my car. I also have the phone set up to turn on the hotspot automatically when it connects to my car through bluetooth and to turn off the hotspot when it disconnects from my car's head unit.
Added bonus is that I picked up a new phone, Samsung A51, bundled with a great data plan and paid less than I was paying for the MiFi SIm.
PS: whichever MiFi you do get would also have to support the bands of your provider, Verizon in this case.
That's true. I normally remote start, so by the time I get there, everything should be booted. The Joying I have boots pretty quickly, and connects to the house WiFi pretty fast. I guess it depends how fast the MIFI device boots up and creates a connection for it to catch.Yeah lots of people do that. The problem is that if it comes on when the power to the car does, it sometimes needs to be driving for a bit before it starts getting data. The Atoto is "sleeping" like a phone, already connected when you power it on. Pull up maps, crank up some tunes, all before hitting reverse.
I see. Thanks! I have Samsung. Never got around to setting up Bixby, but I may try it. I'll have to eat the initial start up costs, but if it works good enough, that'll be a win. Thanks for your help! Since I have the card, I'll still test and report back regarding the SIM card, as well as steps taken. Why do I reboot instead of sleep? It's like when you call for support...the first thing they ask is to reboot to see if the issue has gone away. In any case, it starts up fast enough. The connection is pretty quick, as well. I do a few things when it starts up...I turn off the screen lock, connect to VPN, start Waze and PowerAmp. The WiFi on the head unit connects pretty quickly to the hotspot.
With Samsung phones, they come with Bixby. It's like Macrodroid or Automate or Tasker. You set the rules and actions. I have mine set to perform an action when the head unit bluetooth is connected. My phone automatically connects to the head unit bluetooth. The Bixby routine then turns on the hotspot, WiFi on the phone is turned off and Mobile data is turned on. When I shut off the car, the routine turns off hotspot, turns on WiFi and then turns off mobile data. That suits me for now. There are other conditions that can be set like location, specific SSIDs connected to, etc.
This is a cost thing, as well. If you have a MiFi in the car, that means you need another SIM with corresponding data plan. There's the cost of the MiFi and then you have to figure out how to work with the MiFi...do you leave it on all the time so that it connects as soon as you get in the car? That's OK if your going on short errands. Overnight, does the charge last long enough? What if you leave the car over the weekend...keep it on the whole time?
Anyway, each person does what's more convenient or what they prefer. I tried the MiFi and it was less convenient and more costly than what I have now. Also, where I am, the data plans are more expensive than in other parts of the world, I believe.
So I bought this version with band 4 support in mind ... Let me tell you it has been a big disappointment with Joying. It is the snapdragon 625 I've tried TMobile, att, and Verizon none of which work. Att and T-Mobile get signal and operate but sim connection shuts off randomly. I've replaced sim tray sim card reader and even sim card no luck with keeping connection. It completely drops connection randomly. I went as far as buying a replacement unit since Joying wasn't interested in warranty replacing unit over 4g connection. Both units do the same connect to TMobile 4g momentarily then disconnect, show no sim then reconnect to 3g for 5-10min then back to 4g then disconnects again then repeats. Anyone with snapdragon 625 have luck with TMobile?I notice there are possibly 3 versions, INTEL, UNISOC, and QUALCOMM. I'm not too familiar with chips, so one may be the same. But, I currently have the UNISOC model:
UIS7862 12nm Dual ARM Cortex-A75 + Six ARM A55
Looking to add a SIM. I have Verizon, and want to add a data line to my account for the Unit. I see that someone was able to use Verizon by placing the NEW SIM in a compatible device to activate it first, then add the SIM to the Unit. Once installed, manually add the APN settings using the ADDAPN app. All assuming that when a VERIZON Sim is added, signal is shown. Please verify if these are the correct steps.
Also, I see that the QUALCOMM SNAPDRAGON version has support for BAND 4, which is a widely used band in the US, so I assume it may have better compatibility.
Once I test the steps, I will report back with my findings and any details that will be effective in letting others know what can be achieved.
Sorry to hear. I considered the Snapdragon due to it's popularity in the US and better compatibility with US bands, but after reading up on both processors, many suggested the UIS chip was a more powerful chip than the SnapDragon verison used.So I bought this version with band 4 support in mind ... Hello DroidX2, I appreciate the feedback and also your contribution with the Verizon sim write up which I might try tomorrow. I did extensive testing and fiddling with the sim tray on my first unit, went as far as desolderin and resoldering new sim tray with no luck. I also bought a separate sim tray which helped a little but still my issue persists. On this my second unit I am encountering the same issues as my first unit when I first installed it, 4g connection for a couple minutes then disconnects from the network completely.. I will try wedging a piece of paper to help pressure the sim card in place as i haven't done that on this unit and I am using a micro sim card adapter. I am really stuck I installed this unit November of 2021 and to this day cannot get it to work for more than 20 minutes. I am at the point of just trying to wedge the sim or wait for the mint mobile sim if that doesn't do it I will be waiting for the next generation of headunits with hopefully better us modems and sim trays. Also starting to believe maybe T-Mobile is locking out the unit due to IMEI but can not confirm.Hi Rudy;
The SIM Tray seems to be a bit finicky when installing, so make sure that the SIM is in the correct orientation, and that the metal bracket snaps into place after you place it on the SIM Card and slide it up. You can slightly see the slant in the tray to assist with installation.
It requires a MICRO-SIM, so make sure you have an adapter if your SIM is a NANO SIM. Also, if your SIM install was tight and locked, you could try another SIM Card and see if the connection stays steady.
Although rare, the SIM Tray may have a bad connection on the pins. Try cleaning the SIM Card pins with a cotton swab and alcohol. Restart the Unit after you install the SIM. From there, you may need to manually add your APN settings before you get an actual useable connection.

That's odd that the same issue persists with a second Unit. I'm sure the SIM Card works fine in other devices. The metal bracket, at least on my Unit, holds the SIM Card tightly in place once snapped in. If the bracket works correctly, you shouldn't be able to place anything between it and the SIM Card, unless you mean to place it above the bracket inside the SIM holder.Hello DroidX2, I appreciate the feedback and also your contribution with the Verizon sim write up which I might try tomorrow. What I did is use an IMEI randomizer to simulate a pixel 5. Put those into the file using notepad (two different ones since I have 2 sim slots). Loaded the file onto a usb thumber and plugged it into the usb interface of the unit. My unit popped up a message saying “imei changed”. Then after a reboot the new IMEI was in the unit settings. Plugged in my USMobile sim card and it showed up on my account to register.Google Fi absolutely rapes you with charges for data. My teenage son was on it for a month and we immediately switched him back to Straight Talk.
So @j-5 you used an IMEI switcher? I'm not sure what this actually does... you just 'fooled' the carrier into thinking they're providing service to a cellular phone instead? I don't know much about how to do that. Getting that one from T'eyes does it have to be used on a T'eyes device? I clicked in your post and it downloaded a file (to my computer) but it doesn't do anything. Does this need to be moved to my headunit and 'loaded' somehow?
I just got my wife's new Joying installed, called Straight Talk and they said they just don't support car stereos, I told them I could put a card in it like a tablet and they told me to use a T-Mobile Straight Talk card, but when I asked about what bands it uses, they couldn't tell me - said I needed to get a card and put it in to know that, but I don't want to spend $50-60 AGAIN to get another card that won't work in my unit.
I'm kind of at a loss.
