So my first suggestion is to try the guide and/or video linked in the 2nd post. My other suggestion is to try without the hub. I know some can be flaky. The guide in the 2nd post has some tips to deal with not using a hub.
FYI, worked with MicroSD card; must have been the USB hub.

So did the flash not work or is the issue with the USB drive/boot process? I didn't use a hub to flash on Windows, but I have to use a hub to use a keyboard and USB drive at the same time.

Also, the .cpio file has a .lzma extension, but your post says copy the .cpio file over. So which is it?
I don't know what the problem is. That's why I gave you a few suggestions to try. I also pointed you to the guide in the 2nd post which explains how to do it without a hub, to try to see if the hub is the problem.

I updated the post to reflect the fact it's lzma now.

Thanks; the flash must have worked because when I moved it to MicroSD and took out the hub, we were able to get the proper boot menu.

Thanks for your work on this! Will give it a whirl and give feedback. Other than changing the name from .cpio to .lzma in the docs, this is good. Might be good to tell folks if they don't see the TWRP boot logo to try MicroSD and take the hub out of the picture.

im of no help since i use win 7 x64
sussed it out elliwigy, was getting the same issue on win 8 & win 10, so i disable driver signature verification manually by getting to the troublsshoot menu on start up and the whole process went smoothly after that.

now im going to have a good browse of xda today and find me some goodies to install hopefully :)

Try disabling antivirus stuff, and maybe running the bat file as administrator.

Found port = /dev/cu.usbmodem1420
Handshake complete!
Injecting 2ndinit...
Mediatek Inject, git version fa8d8f

Well it looks like the handshake worked. Unfortunately I don't have a Mac and this was just a best guess effort attempt.

It has nothing to do with you ;)
The handshake always worked its just the transfer.
Also I just moved over to a windows box on a brand new unregistered FTV2 (wanted to see if it can be done this way)
So I put the recovery files and installer same dir, launched the install bat and everything seemed to have worked. Within 5 mins got he press any key to continue. After restarting the FTV there is no recovery, just white logo, color logo and press start.
(latest installer/recovery used. v3/v4)

Sounds like you may have forgotten about the ramdisk. The 2nd post links to a step by step guide and a video. Also you need to make sure there were no errors when the bat file ran. You can also run that multiple times if necessary.

Finally got it to work, thanks to the help of ImCokeMaN & elliwigy. I'd noticed that whenever I connected the FireTV to my PC that I couldn't access the internet so I suspected that there might be a conflict somewhere and in all previous attempts I'd been reading the instructions from AFTVNews so this time I removed all AFTV2 drivers, rebooted with driver signature enforcement disabled, switched off my antivirus, and without bothering to access the internet, installed the preloader drivers and ran the script. It worked immediately.:D

Thanks again for the tips

windows can be tricky but surely it was the signature verification.. if you ask me i have no idea why itd even allow it to install if it wasnt going to function with sig verification enabled but thats windows for you lol

I'm having trouble getting this process to work. I've used both windows and ubuntu and the script completes fine, but my fireTV 2 just keeps rebooting back to the default amazon desktop?
I'm using version 3 of this script, and have tried v3 and v5 of the recovery files, and the firetv is on v5.0.5.

Any help would be appreciated

I checked with winmd5free and the md5sums are all a match.
(firetv2_recovery_v5.zip 16c957c86f1f61160e14a55819610707 and install_firetv2_recovery_v3.zip d9432930b8a6d50b6b09c31ef698b209)
I've tried with an sdcard, and usb drive, for the ramdisk-recovery.cpio.lzma, both of which are recognised when the firetv boots and has the android system folders written on them.
I don't have a usb hub but I've tried with just a usb keyboard and wireless keyboard + touchpad.
But it still just boots into the amazon desktop completely unchanged.
Logging into adb just gives me the "/system/bin/sh: su: not found" problem?!

is the device rooted?

so i understand, you run bat file then powercycle device so the script runs then you dont get the recovery screen?

bothzips are extracted to same directory on pc?
