I update the OP with 5.2.7.2_r1.

Thanks for this. Is an updated needed to the image? I noticed after updating to the 5.2.7.2_r1 from the OP that I could not watch live amazon programmes from prime. In settings -> about there were "system" updates avaliable.

Live events would show the spinning cursor and go back to the event page without playing on my rooted firetv stick. Amazon telephone support suggested the most common reason is a pending update that needed to be installed. A couple of small updates installed OK (no reboot), then live Amazon programmes started working. Intestingly the support agent could tell me which version my firetv stick was running and which update was required to get live events.

I have the custom TWRP teamwin recovery by rbox so unless Amazon update the recovery image I should be be able to re-root. Is there anyway or need to protect the custom recovery?

The Fire TV home version was updated from 6.1.7.1-005 to a later version will post the version tomorrow if I remember. The Fire OS version was still 5.2.7.2 .

Every ota update from big A updates always the recovery.
You may block updates with the well known adb commands...

OK I have blocked now- I wish it was possible to protect the root by "locking" the custom recovery.

The firetv home version now is 6200198.1 (was 6.1.7.1-005)

I updated my montoya stick last week from 5.2.7.3 to 5.2.7.7
Here are the stock links, this time full images ofc, in case rbox or someone else needs it:

Fire OS 5.2.7.4 (656638420)

Fire OS 5.2.7.6 (659654620)

Fire OS 5.2.7.7 (662663720)

PS: I noticed that amaz. fixed the famous 'build.prop block updates method' with 5.2.7.6.
Be aware, changing the build number to 987654321 won't block the OTA updates...

Are these pre-rooted? How did you update if not? Also, what is best way to protect root now?

No. They aren't rooted. It's 100% stock.

I build my own rooted stock roms, quick and dirty... not as nice as the prerooted, but it works for me ;)

Also, what is best way to protect root now?

Use adb shell to disable the update process, like this:

adb shell
su
pm disable com.amazon.device.software.ota
pm disable com.amazon.device.software.ota.override
pm disable com.amazon.tv.forcedotaupdater.v2
