KitKat Update Without Complete Re-root

After flashing this recovery, is it still OK for OTA?

It may fail because of how they do steps, but it will revert the recovery to stock if it works.

You can convert the OTA right on the device:
Get the zip from /cache and move to an sdcard (internal / external)
Unzip it and open the META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script
Delete the recovery.img and recovery folder
Remove everything but the large chunk of commands (all the step one, calling step 2, calling step 3, step 3 stuff)
Zip it back up and flash

Cool, the reason need OTA is to keep Shield up-to-date. As long as we can get updated/modified zip files here, this method is good enough.

I'm glad it isn't too much of an inconvenience :/
I appreciate your work, I don't like having to fastboot the original recovery back over then installing the OTA then reflashing the CWM recovery then re-rooting each update, I love just downloading one file, flashing and that be the end of it.

Thanks :D

I deleted some unneccesarry apps with Titanium a few weeks ago.
Can I install the Update 99 from this thread anyway? Or do I have to flash a stock image before?

Thanks!

Just wanted to say thank you for this. Wasn't sure how to update my Shield after installing CWM and rooting it, this made it painless. Much appreciated! :D

If coming from JellyBean and have not updated your recovery since, you will need to install the recovery provided below, otherwise this step is not required to install the KitKat update over an existing version of JellyBean / KitKat.

Recovery Update

The install requires removing the assert checks since there is an error that the device is a Thor but looking for a Roth (same thing, right?). Install this from the new recovery.

KitKat Update 72

KitKat Update 98

KitKat Update 99

Immediately after installing the update, install the SuperSU recovery package to restore root and you're all set.

This doesn't root the device. This is an update for those that rooted in the past and didn't want to root again by installing the OTA directly.

um... sorry for this but how do I update using the firmware? Do I use Odin?

You could use the instructions you probably skipped while looking for a download...

Pardon my ignorance. I already installed the Recovery update, but I do not know how to install the kitkat updates, is it the same procedure as well?

nevermind, figured it out, so sorry for the trouble.

Thanks for the find about editing the updater-script and needing the older CMW Recovery. Your OTA installs just fine. I am wanting to edit the OTA to remove bloatware and bake some apps into the ROM but every time that I zip the folder and flash it it in CWM it errors out without an error code. It simply says "Update Installing....Installation Aborted". I also tried starting simple by just editing the updater-script to remove parts 1 and 3 myself and I get the same error. Do you have any experience with this error?
