Thanks, so, to summarize about the firmware: we can try different ones and revert easily if there is a problem.

Do you have experience with flashing a vendor update? https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/vendor/ginkgo/
I cannot find other sources of information about this.
For my understanding (but maybe I am completely wrong) a vendor update will update the vendor software pre-installed in the stock rom MIUI (for me: bloatware). If you are on a different = custom rom (like LOS or CrDroid) you don't need such a vendor update - at least I never did so and missed nothing. If you update the custom rom, all needed files will be updated.

Edit:
see here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/how-i-update-vendor-firmware-on-lineageos-16.4006271/
... not in order to do so but to see the comment to this post

Aren't FW updates important for security?
Maybe (but never heard this). If so, I wonder why they are then so rare (compared to rom updates, which are very frequent and routinely address security issues acc. to the changelog). If my system runs stable, I don't change the fw. I do so only if after changing to a different rom I observe issues. As mentioned, this is my pov. Other opinions/comments are welcome.

I want to revive my Ginkgo device thats been sitting on the shelf for a while. I have the International/global version of the phone thats on US T-Mobile MVNO network. I want to update to the most recent Pixel Experience ROM 13. I see the latest Global firmware is from Feb,2022 but the European firmware is from Dec,2022. If I install the europe firmware, will it break cellular capabilities or should I just update to the global firmware before updating to the latest PE or any other custom rom for that matter?

I recommend you ask this better in a thread dealing with the rom you mentioned. Often there is a clear recommendation for the fw to use. In case of LOS18.1 it is global. A more general answer: just try the one. If you observe any issues, just flash the other and try.

My concern was whether using the wrong firmware would hard-brick the device and might make it irreparable. If the just a matter of matching the firmware to the rom, thats not an issue as long as I can use recovery and install a different firmware which is either A11 or A10.

Don't think so that you can hardbrick your phone, but never say never. I tried in the past to flash EU-firmware and observed issues (sim not detected, no wifi if I remember correctly) but no bricking. Booting back into TWRP and flashing a Global-firmware solved the issue.

Bit the bullet yesterday and installed the european firmware on the phone. Was able to access fastboot and recovery just fine so now I'm confident about installing non matching firmware.

Since I was able to do a clean install, I tried combinations of different roms and recoveries and the european firmware. I ran into a wifi connectivity issue with the latest PE13 ROM + their recovery which to my surprise was resolved after I changed recovery from PE13 Recovery to TWRP. I posted about it on the PE13 thread. I finally settled on the latest crDroid 9 (Android 13) with TWRP 3.7 and European firmware.

Considering the firmware modifies the modem basebands, I did extensive testing of cellular data and calling on volte: making/receiving calls, making/receiving calls while phone has been idle for a long time (deep sleep). Same goes for wifi in terms being able to ping the phone during different states. Thus far no issues.

And I bricked mine 8T (EU). Perhaps you could help me out?
What I did in TWRP:
1. Tried to install firmware for EU willow stable V12.5.5.0.RCXEUXM 11.0 Europe Download 2022-06-22
from https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/firmware/
2. It gave me an error: This is ginkgo.
3. So I installed
Redmi Note 8 ginkgo stable V12.5.12.0.RCOEUXM 11.0 Europe Download 2022-12-08

What I got:
The phone immediatelly shuts down upon pressing POWER. I can't get to neither fastboot nor recovery It just vibrates every second and flashes a logo (fastboot) for less than 0.5 s.

Any idea how to just recover the data (photos and downloads)? I don't care about the system. It was freezing on me anyway.

Have a look at this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ight-turns-on-for-a-second-using-edl.4228641/

The symptoms you're describing are similar to this. And never flash the wrong firmware again for any device. I have a ginkgo, and sometimes when I wipe my phone, it shows as willow in twrp and gives me error. I also prefer to use ofox recovery, because that never gives me this type of error. Anyways, good luck. I hope you fix it soon.

Can you get into fastboot? Ginkgo and Willow have different devices, whereas the firmwares we were disscusing are for the same device but different region. I ran into the same issue with the TWRP telling me it was willow when its actually ginkgo. This was a bug with TWRP that was fixed (there was a thread on this forum but I lost track of where it is). After updating TWRP it was fixed. Not sure what the options are if you installed ginkgo on willow firmware or vise-versa.

All Xiaomi custom ROMs users complain from a single problem, which is the firmware updates. As there are many devices with no one to provide the newest firmware update every single release, and developers who provide updates to devices may forget or be busy sometimes, so releases are provided later. Here comes my solution:

Xiaomi Firmware Updater (Redmi Note 8/8T)
    jSIVrRy.png
    Code:
    #include
    /*
    * Your warranty is now void.
    *
    * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
    * thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
    * do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
    * before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
    * you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
    */

A set of various scripts that automatically generates Xiaomi firmware flashable zip files every MIUI new update!
My scripts download MIUI official ROMs, both Developer and Stable, Global and China, extracts the firmware-update folder, generates firmware flashable zip with auto-written "updater-script", and uploads them automatically to many servers.
The scripts are completely automated, running on a Linux server every six hours.

    Note:
Names will be in the following manner:
    • fw_ginkgo_miui_GINKGOGlobal_*.zip is Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Global firmware
    • fw_ginkgo_miui_GINKGOINGlobal_*.zip is Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 India firmware
    • fw_ginkgo_miui_GINKGO_*.zip is Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 China firmware
    • fw_willow_miui_WILLOWGlobal_*.zip is Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T Global firmware
    • fw_willow_miui_WILLOWEEAGlobal_*.zip is Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T EEA firmware

    Downloads
You can get updates always from various mirrors available on the website:

    Frequently Asked Questions:
What is Firmware? Is it a full ROM or OTA package?
Firmware is not a ROM nor OTA Package, it's a set of low-level drivers that helps the operating system do whatever it wants to do. It includes various things like Modem, Bluetooth, Bootloader, DSP and etc.
Why should I update the Firmware?
Firmware is provided from Xiaomi directly, and there are no sources for it to let developers build and edit it on their own like custom ROMs, so if you want to keep your device up to date always update your firmware!
Do I need updating the Firmware If I'm MIUI official or custom ROM user?
No, MIUI ROMs contain the firmware-update package which I extract and provide here.
    What are the supported devices?
All Snapdragon and MTK devices including China-only devices.
Check the full devices list here
    How to update the firmware?
1- Download the package you want to flash. IT MUST BE NAMED WITH THE SAME CODENAME OF YOUR DEVICE.
2- Flash it using TWRP or any custom recovery. There's no need to wipe/format anything before or after the installation.
How to check the updated firmware?
Usually, the modem gets updated with newer firmware, you can check it in Settings > About > Baseband.
