Alpineman, you seemed to have a lot of great answers, so I was wondering if you had a solution to this. I'm on Windows 7 - although I tried a different pc with Windows 8 - same thing. I get "unknown USB device" I've downloaded drivers, talked to Samsung (what a waste), went into the device menu and tried to manually select the driver. The pc says the driver is installed and it also says that the best driver has been selected for your device, but it still has it listed as unknown with no access to the media files. Without the pc recognizing the phone, Kies doesn't work either. Do you know of any fix?

Thanks for any suggestions
Angel
Also try different cables. Oddly enough all phones don't recognize all cables the same. Some can charge, but no proper data, some give data, but can't charge properly, etc. Yet on other phones, works fine. I don't understand that, but I have two cables here that act that way.

Thanks Platin, I did try that, but no luck so far.

Take jeweler spectacles and look inside the USB port you might find a bent pin or corroded pin that you might be able to clean. If that is not the case. Take phone apart and get a super fine solder iron and rework the soldering joints on the USB port. You can replace usb port there like 2 bucks on e bay. Buy a few ports incase u mess up. Also buy desoldering solder so solder will stay molten for a while while you pry off port from board. This is not a task for the inexperienced. You have to be very precise and if you don't remove port correctly you will rip off the soldiering pads on the board and phone will be shot.

I'm terrible at soldering. I sold the S3 with full disclosure instead of trying to repair it. The S4, Note 2, and Note 3 (S5, too?) has a user replaceable daughter board where the USB port is attached to. Definitely easy to replace those. No soldering required. See YouTube for disassembly instructions. Look for author "LESSONS". He makes great disassembly videos.

my stock messenger sends and received mms just fine. Always has. Third party messengers such as Handcent, hangouts, 8sms can not send MMS.

Method two allowed my phone to send and received what Ill guess to be 20% of the mms via 8sms. I'm trying to find out if it's only ME that cant get 3rd party apps to send mms or if it's all Virgin mobile users. If you know of a forum, thread etc please post it for me. I tried putting these APN settings into hangouts and it did not work at all. Im going to put the apn into handcent later.

my specs: s3, non rooted, 4.2.2

After I finally got MMS to work after changing my donor phone and changing my APN settings as I described here I tried to use the built-in bluetooth tethering on my phone and it would not work. It was assigning my computer an IP address but not allowing internet connectivity.

I had one APN with the following settings:
Code:
NAME="Sprint"
APN="cinet.spcs"
PROXY=""
PORT=""
USERNAME="none"
PASSWORD="none"	(will appear as asterisks)
SERVER="*"
MMSC="http://mms.sprintpcs.com"
mmsproxy="68.28.31.7"
mmsport="80"
mcc="310"
mnc="120"
authentication type=not set
APN type="mms"
APN protocol=IPv4
APN roaming protocol=IPv4
APN enable/disable=APN enabled
Bearer=unspecified
And I changed the APN attribute of this APN from "cinet.spcs" to "sprint" and then my bluetooth tethering started working and MMS continued to work. (I did not have to reboot after making this change)
Just wanted to post this info in case someone else has this issue.
I am running CM 10.1.3 on a sprint galaxy nexus,

I need a new donor

My donor phone no longer supports mms. Any help with changing to a new donor phone? Someone set it up for me originally and I'd like to try it myself this time. I have sph-l710 and the donor is SPH-M540.

mms

Let me get this straight: You're saying that if a Sprint HTC Diamond is the donor phone, MMS messages can not be sent or received anymore? If so, this would explain why they stopped working for me all of the sudden. I'm still puzzled by the list itself though because it says only the Diamond 6950 is affected, when in fact I'm pretty sure that my donor is a Diamond 500. Did they just make an error and write the wrong model on the list accidentally or should I still be able to do MMS?

Correct. Lots of phones' picture mail got "decommissioned". Some that have been decommissioned previously have been reinstated however, such as the HTC Touch Pro2 and Palm Treo Pro 850.

See Sprint link for partial list of decommissioned phones in the first post.
