Just do it!

The instructions are somewhat hard to find, but...

1. Install the Android-SDK,

2. Make a path to the fastboot command via right clicking Computer selecting properties select advanced system, environment variables, click on PATH and in the variable value input paste:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools;C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\tools

3. Make sure you de-zip the stock us Wifi firmware into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools directory. Download these from the MotoDev web-site.

4. Place your xoom in fastboot by turning off then repowering holding the volume down button to enter fastboot mode.

Open the command prompt if not already open...

Unlock your Xoom by typing:

fastboot oem unlock

at the command prompt.

then enter the following:

fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock

Once complete your Xoom should reboot thinking it is a stock US device, so re-configure and you should be prompted with the Update for 3.1.

Job done, no more waiting around like a second class citizen for Motorola to bother passing on the released Google updates to your device. And 3.1 is definately worth the effort...

And yes there is absolutely no reason why European customers paying a premium price point should have to do this to obtain a routine update in a realistic time-frame. Hopefully once flashed to a Stock US device we should receive updates within the same operational window as those who purchased within the US.

Hope this helps, it certainly helped me! (PS this will of course blank your device back to default, once done this should be the last time as updates should now arrive in line with their release!)

Will this work on any non us xoom, mine is from Mexico.

Also do we need any drivers since after putting the first command and putting the xoom in fastboot mode I get waiting for device on the command prompt and nothing happends

Regards

Thanks guys for this explaination.

I'm a french user, with a Wifi model (MZ604) and motorola really su*ks with 3.1 for EU users...
So I really want to flash US Stock image for getting 3.1 update, and so get CWM, root and Tiamat if I want.

So I've got 2 questions :

- do i really need to relock my device ? It needs to be unlocked for flashing CWM and obviously I think that trying to relock with non original recovery will brick my xoom...
- if something goes wrong with root or tiamat, i just have to reflash US images to go back to stock again ?

I know that i'll loose my warranty doing this, but as i can go back to stock US Rom in case of problem, there's nothing wrong with that for me. Hoping that Xoom hardware is fine :)

Oh and a precision, i send a mail few days ago to Motorola for 3.1 update and Stock images for EU users, they will not release stock imges for EU users...

Thank you

couldn't agree more.

What's worse at the moment is that US seem to be getting all the benefits - 3.1 update, Music Beta, amazon appstore.

and no one cares about the rest of the world!

While the Transformer in the UK got the 3.1 update yesterday.

I know I'm not looking for any major improvements with the 3.1 update but c'mon Moto - stop sucking and making yourself look terrible in the eyes of everyone outside the US.

Anyway,

Unsure about the relocking...
Yes as far as I can see you can reflash stock US wifi images, if anything goes wrong....

I'm thinking I might flash the US wifi image this weekend if i get some free time... :)

Hm

is it worth even doing just three steps?

1. Unlock the device via fastboot. Instructions here. DO NOT RE-LOCK EVER!!

2. Flash the Official & complete US 3.0.1 HWI69 ROM. Links here. Every time I tried to download the "does not require login" version from mediafire I got a corrupted zip, so instead I downloaded from the Motorola developer site (with instructions) here.

3. Once the 3.0.1 Rom was up and running, and I had an internet connection, I got the OTA notification for the 3.1 update and installed it. It took about 10 minutes to notify me once I had connection, probably because it had to download it before notifying me. After the install and reboot process, I had a stock 3.1 install, but still didn't have sdcard access. So, I kept going.
This would suggest that you would have a Wifi Xoom, with a US image, updatable via OTA to 3.1?

the steps to root and get sdcard access are surely optional from there on?

UK 3G Xoom

This might be cross topic - but from the thread I understand 3G UK Xoom can't go to US 3.1 or else it's bricked. However - I want cifs on my CWM'd and rooted 3.0.1 Xoom. I've tried a couple cifs.ko's, and insmod'ing cifs.ko and kicking off CIFS manager results in an instant reboot.

Has anyone had any success with any versions of tiamat and uk 3.0.1 3g xoom?

I flashed the US one last night - and they released the Euro image (3.0.1 I assume) the next day.

at least I have a place to return to now if i chose.

Yep - I've searched and read as far as I've had time to - I've seen the 5 step process and I'm a bit scared....!! I'll have a closer look again on the weekend. I've read a stupid amount of posts on the Tiamat topic itself, and searched high and low. and for all that reading I think I've been scared off... I'll wait till the 3.1 image is out from Motorola before going 3.1 myself - i'd hate to brick it.

I was more interested in any advice/success/failures of running tiamat with 3.0.1- I want my SD card, Wireless, 3g and cifs all to function. CIFS should work already with a rooted 3.0.1, however the cifs.ko causes spontaneous reboots when trying to mount a share. (I've PM'd a dev about that elsewhere)

Thanks!

I've just performed a flash on my UK WIFI xoom. I downloaded the MZ604_HWI69 US stock images from the motorola developer site and used fastboot to flash the device. The HC 3.1 update has just started, so in a few minutes, I'll be running stock 3.1 on my UK WIFI xoom.

If I ever need to return the device, or sell it on, I can roll back to the stock UK image as motorola have now provided these, too.

Does anyone know of any problems running a us rom on a uk wifi XOOM? I was specifically wondering whether the us rom would allow me to use all the same wifi channels as the uk one, and does the android market work ok? Does it think you're in the US, or does it go off the setting in your google account?
Also for those of you that went over to the us rom in may/june, did you get the subsequent updates at the same time as genuine us xooms?
