Try using Ground Zero ROMs (GZR) gapps (based on Beans gapps) which always work for me including on the new 5/14 Validus.

link to GZR gapps: https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=189325

btw, the new 5/14/2018 Validus for FLO is pretty awesome... working camera for me (using Silent Camera app from Play Store), you can change the fonts and has the May security update. :good:

Could please share the link to version 2.3 dated 5/14.
I did the search and click on all Links, only found version 2.0 dated 4/2.
Thanks.

btw, you should follow the Ground Zero Rom Google+ community since it seems you get more and faster news on the ROM there...

An updated version 1.9 is available. Camera doesn't work and so far none of the 3rd party camera apps seem to work but everything else seems to work including NFC and the ROM looks and runs super. Link to AH and ROM: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=890129502657593922.

Does the battery drain quickly or is it acceptable?

Tried other Oreo ROMs and the battery wasn't too great.

Sent from my Asus Nexus 7 (2013) using XDA Labs

Tried to flash the June build but had a problem with open gapps. The pico was giving me insufficient space error. I ended up going clean and using a GZR gapps from Feb. Everything is up and running smooth as usual so once again many thanks for keeping this device alive! :good:

Is this rom better than stock?

Hello, I just wondered if anyone could tell me if this rom runs better than the stock rom, as my 2 young sons have 1 each which are stuck on 6.0.1 as google long since stopped support for this tablet, and they are a bit laggy sometimes so could do with a serious update to make em run faster/better and still easy for them to use?
Thanks

Yep, it does for me. I've been running it since it's release and just yesterday decided to wipe clean and reinstall again to put some new life back into the old 7. Happy to say the tablet is nice and snappy again.

Thanks, I put it on one of the tablets for now, runs much faster than the other one.
The process to do it gave me problems from start to finish.

Dumb question, can the bootloader be relocked now its done?
And I'm assuming it needs to remain rooted for the custom rom?

Thanks

I'm not sure about the bootloader but root is optional. I'm running it without root and it's working just fine. I just flashed the rom and gapps and set it up.

Runs great....

Despite the hard work to install this rom it was worth it, everything works really well and battery life seems good.
A brief rundown of the problems I faced, it may help others in the future.
I was using wugs toolkit, my first hurdle was adb, couldn't get it to connect to the tablet, messing with pc drivers didn't seem to work, selecting file transfer mode made the windows sound but failed, luckily selecting photo transfer mode made adb work.
So I unlocked the bootloader and tried to root and install twrp, it got to the point of showing me twrp on the tablet but then wugs was telling me it couldn't detect adb in recovery, so this was a dead end, nothing I did made it work.
So, I flashed the rom which I had already copied to the storage, gapps however would not flash, even pico, I tried to repartition but it did not work at all, remaining system was still 139mb, so I got a tiny gzr version as another member mentioned earlier and this worked.

And to get root I had to manually download SuperSU.zip and copy to storage then flash via twrp in recovery, this worked ok.
I may have missed some details from the steps and problems I faced as I'm typing this from memory, but I will edit it when I do the other tablet at a later date.
ps. there was a point where twrp needed flashing a 2nd time because it wouldn't work but I cant remember exactly why this happened so will update that too.

Hello, thanks for new life on my N7! Two things, please. 1. I can't figure out how to get the swipe keyboard to work and 2. Google voice Assistant is not available. I can't train it to my voice to respond to OK google.
Thanks!

To get the swipe working you could try installing the Gboard app. That's what I use and swipe works just fine. As far as assistant goes I just tried installing it and it says the assistant isn't available on this device. Best I could come up with was voice search.

Notes from the Official Google+ Community:

    About the ROM :
Validus is GZ-AOSP (Fancy name of AOSP-CAF?) based with a Dark Wolfie theme with full OMS support DUI

    Substratum G+ Community

    Installation Instructions

ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP FIRST!

    Coming from another rom/clean install:
    Reboot to recovery.
Wipe system, cache, dalvik/art cache, data
    Flash rom zip and gapps
    Reboot

Updating from a previous build/dirty flash:
Wipe system, cache, dalvik/art cache in recovery
Flash rom zip, gapps and any other zips you may use
    Reboot

Substratum support is there as long as you have root and latest Substratum app. Some themes may have a little catching up to do, have fun testing them!

If you have any issues, grab a log after a clean flash, upload and link here please. Add steps to reproduce the issue in your post.
Do not report issues dirty flashing this over some unofficial build or with some kernel flashed.
Logcat Extreme app is great as you can choose to start recording a log just before reproducing an error and stop recording just after so you log just the part you need.

Xposed is not supported here, if you want to run it and have issues, try an Xposed thread for support and bug reports here only welcome with a clean install with no Xposed present.

New builds have been added to first post, also pushed via OTA. Rootless Substratum support have been added. Tesla & Validus also have March security update, Tipsy does not have it yet. Might build a new Tipsy build when that is done, but haven not decided yet... Also a few minor updates to kernel. Enjoy!
