Scanner Radio is good, TuneInRadio is good. Both have local weather while Scanner Radio monitors mostly public frequencies such as amateur radio, public safety and disaster relief, TuneInRadio specializes in 'local' FM broadcasts from national sources with public safety available to a lesser amount.

The deal-killer for me would be that the radio uses headphone wires as an antenna. If you just want to pop the kickstand and listen or use it as background noise you're out of luck.

I'd say in hurricane situations there are better and more appropriate methods of getting information but my posts here are simply responses to the original question.

In the default music app you can hit menu and switch to speakers,
need the headphones plugged in, but will play the audio through the phones speakers

You are absolutely right but I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment. My emergency radio is dead, my backup emergency radio is a 1920's S/W set and the lantern battery it uses is probably 10 years old. I just want to be able to use my phones FM chip as a backup to the backup.
