did anyone try changing fonts? if which app does it without issues.. or may be tried substratum... please let me know.

I tried with an app I found here on XDA called Power Fonts

It worked fine and there's hundreds of fonts to pick from.

is it without root? looks very old and outdated.

Yes it doesn't require root, and I can confirm that it works. After installing you can pick the system font through display settings, you will find many more fonts there.
It's also easy to uninstall if you don't like it.

You have 3 font styles to choose from right in the device Settings.
