I was able to successfully root my stock Rogers 2.2 after sideloading z4root. If I remember correctly it took a couple tries but eventually it took.

Now, as for my question...

As mentioned above I've got a rooted Rogers i896 running the stock 2.2 (UXJL1). I rooted with Z4root, installed Titanium Backup, ROM Manager (But not Clockwork Mod yet) and applied OCLF. What I would really like to do is move to a nice reliable custom ROM (Thinking one of Design Gears' projects) but am feeling totally overwhelmed by the volume of information available on the forums. I'm also having a hard time determining what information is up to date and what's outdated.

From where I'm at now what steps would I take to flash a new ROM (Say Cognition or Firefly)?

Thanks in advance for any help, tips or reading suggestions. Cheers.

I wouldn't run OCLF as it's not really worth it now days.

For installing a ROM - I would look at the videos posted under the DEV forums as it is pretty straight forward.

And I would trust anything DG posts for Rogers - they are pretty much guaranteed to work and the install process is pretty simple.

Rooting ATT captivate that is running froyo

I'm a relatively new captivate owner. I did a manual update to put froyo on phone. I'm guessing I have the drivers I need to root, because my laptop recognizes my phone and I transfer files back and forth. Would someone walk me through the one click root method? M dumb it down a little. Please help, would like to root, but don't know a lot about it and want to do it right

Frankly, you shouldn't root until you feel comfortable with it. There are numerous methods, read through the Captivate Android Development section, the stickies at the top in particular, understand what you are doing and go for it. It's a bit scary, but trust me, if an old lady like me can do it, you can do it. :)

Great thread. I've managed to root my brand new captivate using SuperOneClick and use Titanium backup but the How to guide fails at that point when it comes to Clockwork.

I'm sure the info is all here in this forum somewhere. I will eventually find it!:D

I didn't put CWM in the guide as that is something that is instructed in the How to Install a Custom ROM threads.

But.. if anyone has any suggestions on any additions they would like to see lemme know and I can get it added.

Glad people are getting some use out of this thread :)

Put in an AT&T SIM; the Captivate does not come with the T-Mobile US 3G bands.

Windows will not see my device

I have what looks like a soft brick. I can get into download mode. The problem is that Windows 7 64bit does not see my phone at all. No unrecognized device. No nothing.

I was running the i9000 drivers with no problems. I was trying to update to the i897 drivers. Odin recognized my phone. I picked the .tar file and put it in the PDA slot. The flash failed. Now windows gives me nothing when I plug it in.

Help! I am desperate.

Hey guys still trying to figure this out..!!! any help is appreciated

Not sure if you've solved your problem yet but, are your rooting from stock Eclair or a custom ROM? Is the Samsung Galaxy Captivate 1 Click root the only method you tried? I used the AIO Tool box the last time I rooted and it went smooth for me. SuperOneClick is the other method that I've tried and it is pretty slick. I'd check out their thread for more info on your problem. I hope that helps.

Personally I think we need to get a standardized way of writing the Thread Title that includes all the info we might be interested in. And encourage the Devs to stick to it in their posts. Maybe something like

[ROM][firmware version][baseband version][kernel version] name and latest build number: cute message if desired

I'm sure it has been suggested before as many Devs are already doing something very similar. If all the Devs titled their threads that way it would make it easier to pick out the threads we are looking for. Maybe the Devs just need a little gentle suggestion.

I couldn't agree more, it would have to be standardized within the forum posts for devs to be able to post new roms. Not sure if that is possible but I hope so.

I would suggest using superoneclickroot to unroot your phone and see if you still have 3g service, then trying the root process one more time. If that doesn't work, try one of the fantastic roms that the site offers CM7 or Continuum or my favorites.
