For those that don't use cases........

First off, I don't want this discussion to turn into a war between those who use cases, and those who don't. I would just like to know how much resale value means to those who don't. Do you guys plan on reselling it? Does getting less money for it matter? Because let's be honest, without a case, it will get at least minor scratches, (sometimes not so minor) dirt, signs of wear, etc.

Me personally, I've had a case on it since minute one. (I still haven't touched the back of the phone with my fingers) But, I figure since it will still look brand new when I go to sell it, I will get top $$$ that can go towards the next Google masterpiece. Before anyone talks about bulk, I use a minimal clear case (so I can still see my beautiful red N5) so I figure I have the best of both worlds. (protection and looks)

Interested how others feel.

I used to use cases. Now I just enjoy the feel of my bare phone. As long as you don't drop it and completely screw up the phone, minor scratches will only help you get at most around $30 extra. If that amount of money is worth using a case for you then do you. But also, it's much easier to sell a phone with a few wear and tear for a cheaper price then having to wait around for someone that is willing to pay extra for a near perfect phone(cus dust gets in a case and causes scratches also). If you don't mind a case and you feel like a clumsy person that drops their phone often then use it. If your using it because your protecting it for resale, quit being a chumpchangemuthafk%r and enjoy your phone. Just my thoughts, do whatever makes you happy

Also, I don't see a single scratch on my n5 and I've been naked for at least 2 months. Ironically, the only damage on my phone is wear on all four corners due to the slim spigen case I was using.

I've never used cases on any of my phones because I don't like the bulk and the feeling that is added. I don't plan on selling my phone. Old smartphones I've had have found new uses (media player, camera)

I have my old smartphones (keep them updated with roms). I allow my kids and their friends to use them around the house as mini tablets on wifi. I also like to expieriment with different roms and such (i'm a crackflasher), and they allow me to do so without constantly wiping data :)

It really depends on a lot of things such as your environment, what sort of activities you do etc. However, having said that. I carry my phone eveywhere - climbing mountains, playing sports and so on. I've never used my phones in cases. I've been pretty lucky as yes I have dropped my phone on the odd occasion, however this has been about once per year. I'm usually very careful with my devices. The last couple of years, all I've used for protection is a sticker/skin on the back and a screen protector on the front. My Nexus 4 was as good as new when I sold it and my Nexus 5 is still absolutely mint (as new).

Yes protection is good but I personally hate making my phone feel bulky and ugly. I just try to look after it. That has worked well for me so far :) Touch wood!

Case and glass screen protector absolutely necessary thing.

I definitely can go around for the first couple of days after getting a new device without a case, but knowing myself I tend to drop things. A lot. So I always end up buying one within the first week of owning the device. On my G2 I have a Platinum case from Best Buy. A bit pricey, yes. But it is super slim, easy to grip, and actually adds a bit of class to the phone so it's a win win :)

No offence but saying it's "absolutely necessary" is a bit misleading. I've had several phones over the last few years ranging from the plastic Samsung's to LG Nexus 4 with glass back to HTC One's aluminium...none have any scratches. None have been used in a case. It depends on how you look after them...and no I don't keep mine in a cotton wool. right now my Nexus 5 is sitting on the wooden desk and so is my Galaxy S5.

I don't use a case or screen protector. I don't care about resale value. I'll just use my phone as is. I think Nexus phones are already pretty cheap, so there isn't much resale value, might as well just keep it ad a backup.

The most i use in terms of a "case" is a TPU shell. Basically just something like the Cruzerlite TPU cases..... or even a cheapy eBay TPU case. Never once used a screen protector, because lets face it, they tend to just make the screen feel like crap (and glass ones seem a bit too fragile to me, anyway)

and i agree 100% with ritzxda. Cases aren't necessary if you treat your phone with care, as you SHOULD treat something that cost you a fairly significant amount of money. I can't remember a time where i dropped my phone. Only damage i've ever had to a phone i've owned was on my old Motorola Atrix 4G, where there were hairline cracks on the back cover at the corners from removing and reattaching the cover multiple times.

You don't have to handle your phone with velvet gloves to make it last.... just like you don't have to have it in an armor-plated inch-thick case with hardened glass protecting GLASS. You just have to be mindful of what you're doing with your phone, and where it is at all times. If you're like me and always have your phone in your front left pocket.... don't go doing stuff and putting heavy objects against it or running into stuff and hitting it. When you hold your phone.... HOLD your phone. Not necessarily kung-fu grip... but not so haphazardly that a moment of your mind wandering.... or even a gentle breeze could send it tumbling to the ground.

It's not rocket science, people. Case manufacturers can make a fortune on clumsy people.

I always purchase a case for my phones, but only use them when i'm camping or working out or something. i've found that a case seems to make me less careful with my phone. I hate scratches, scuffs and oil prints though, so i always purchase and apply a Skinomi or Xtreme Guards skin for my phone. I've also found that some cases can actually scratch the phone pretty badly.

I'm a phone swapper, so 98 percent of the time i sell my phone when i'm done with it. The only phone i've broken was my second nexus 4 (traded to get a white one) after dropping it from waist level onto cement. Absolutely my fault, and i happened to be using a TPU case that day. most cases aren't meant to protect from falls anyway, so i figure a skinomi does just fine.

I don't use a case, but then again that's because I'm undecided on one. I've shattered a few screens in my day.... Not concerned about resale value.

No case or screen protector here. Thats what Insurance is for. lol. I don't sell my phones when I get a new one anyway. I like to collect them for some weird reason. But even though I don't use a case in a normal day, I do put it on if I feel there is a chance of dropping it. Like maybe a night out or a concert or something. Cases just take away the beauty of the device.

For me is not about protecting the phone. I simply don't have room in my pocket for phone and wallet so it's easiest to combine both.
The phones get recycled to wife and kids and are usually pristine when I pass them on but don't stay that way for long :). As to resale I've purchased a couple of second hand phones but would never buy a scratched one.

I use a case, but the reason is not related to resale value. I just don't have an extra $390 for a new N5.
The case also makes the phone way easier for me to hold and use it. To me, it also feels better and looks better with a case on. Resale value never crossed my mind, although it does seem a slight benefit now that you mention it.

Most of the time my phone is protected with a cheap 0.3mm case or a Nexus bumper case with a glass SP but that's mostly due to my work environment at sea where I spend up to 90days out. Once I'm home I throw away my case where I don't have to see it again till duty calls. Its nothing to do with resell value but I tend to get slightly OCD when I see scratches.

no screen protector here, they don't give the same feel on the screen, and still I don't care of the microscratches if I can't use my phone as it was intended to.

I wouldn't use a case too, for the reasons already listed, but I know I'll drop my nexus (and actually it did happen several times)... also, the bugdroid circuit is really nice

The last time I used a case was back in early 2010. I've dropped a phone one time, and thankfully it was a Moto G so it came out completely fine. I've set some simple rules for myself, like always keeping a firm grip, always using 2 hands to operate while standing/moving, and just never pulling the phone out of my pocket in a parking lot.

Above all, I have a parkinsonian tremor. Because of that fact alone, I don't excuse anyone short of having muscular dystrophy for dropping their phone.

But, you know what's always cheaper than a good case? Insurance. Just always have insurance.

Edit: Oh, and for resale value, I recently sold my Galaxy Nexus that I had for almost 2 years. It was sold as being in flawless condition, and the buyer was totally surprised at how perfect it was. The oleophobic coating was worn off, but that happens at about 6 months of use.
