I did a bit of searching and found lots of threads similar to this in one way or another like these:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-.../72938-cant-enter-download-recovery-mode.html

http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/312637-recovery-mode.html

And a search of xda using "captivate recovery mode" turned up many hits.
Edit-Like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776446

There was mention of Odin messing up the 3 button combo on some phones.

Here's a guide with different techniques for download and recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953930

Good luck.

Yes, but I thought flashing non-eclair bootloaders fixed that...

Froyo uses the same boot loaders as Eclair, does it not? Why is it that I can't even upgrade to froyo then? I've tried flashing B1 /B2 and then a kernel like speedmod, but recovery seems broken there too (haven't tried the 3 button fix because I wan't to upgrade to the GB BL's). I've read somewhere that mentioned problems with the phone you have based on the model number you had. For instance, the # on the back of my phone reads 1010. Does this factor into anything regarding recovery?

No, the problem was/is with SoD (Sleep of Death). The phone would go into a black screen during Idle and never wake unless you pulled the battery. It's still seen a bit around here but more carriers offered replacement to those phones back when it happened.

As for Eclair and Froyo, yes they use the same BLs. If you're using the old one click, then you already have the Eclair BLs. Your phone has something wrong with it, most likely something corrupted or simply bad. You should be able to get in recovery (with the right button combo) no matter what ROM/version you're running. And you're obviously able to get in download mode if you're flashing with Odin.

Have you tried rooting the phone (superoneclick) and using ADB to get in recovery?

I can root and boot into recovery using both adb and recovery when I'm plain old using 2.1 Eclair, but the second I flash 2.2, or 2.3, or any custom ROM, stuck at AT&T screen and the 3 button combo doesn't work.

I know I've said it before but... This makes no sense

So let's say you flash Speedmod kernel with Odin 1.85 (don't forget the .pit), try to get in recovery = you get nothing?

Same thing happens if you were to let's say, flash Firefly 3.0 directly from 2.1? This is assuming you're waiting a few minutes to let it boot (I had first boot take up to 10min).

I understand it must be annoying to go over these steps and being asked those questions none stop but it's the only way we might be able to find a solution.

PS.: 3 button combos (both volume+power) is on GB and up. You could try (if you haven't already) after flashing and that it doesn't fully boot, to pull the battery, try to get in recovery with: Battery out, USB plugged in, hold volume up+home button, put the battery in. There are a couple other weird ways like this that might get you in recovery. Another one being: Battery out, USB plugged in, volume up + power button and put the battery in. *Plugging the USB cable often counts as holding the power button*

What PIT file are you referring to? All I see is a .tar file that goes into the PDA slot in ODIN. Plus since I have an i897, I don't have a home button to press for your recovery techniques... :/

In order to even want to flash the kernel, I need to be in Froyo, which I'm not... Should I use a oneclick to flash B1 or B2 and then reboot into download again to flash the kernel?

Also, flashing firefly with CWM doesn't work either, even after waiting 10 minutes at the AT&T logo screen.

Umm, I haven't used Odin 1.85 in a while but did think it had a .pit file. My bad if it doesn't (at work, can't check right now).

As for the home button, I meant the capacitive one (bottom on your screen). Either way, it was more of a shot in the dark.

Flashing a kernel can be done with Odin (or in recovery, depending on the file format). If you can flash Firefly, then you can flash Speedmod (Speedmod is cooked into Firefly.zip).

I do have another shot in the dark: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13503747&postcount=2 (Disclamer (for other readers): Read before flashing!)

The download link is a Odin packaged Mosaic IX, flashable from Eclair. Know that the flash can't be interupted, just like most Odin flash.

Also, I'm pretty sure you already are but when flashing KK4, you're using the bootloaders version right?

Yes, when flashing KK4, I am using WITH Bootloaders.

Also, when I tried flsahing Mosaic, this is what happened:

And stuck here, never booted into recovery. I tried manually, couldn't boot into recovery.

EDIT: I should also add that I needed to hold down the volume down button to enter Download mode for some reason. Volume up or both doesn't appear to do anything.

Ok so I went to ask a bit higher up and got another shot in the dark.

Turn off your anti-virus and re-download Odin KK4 with bootloaders, then flash it (keeping your anti-virus off).

Nobody else caught this? These are i9000 bootloaders. Power or USB + vol down is download mode, power or usb + vol up for recovery. I thought you were flashing kk4 with bootloaders? Quit flashing between the two because you are going to get your combinations all mixed up! When you flash KK4, make sure you have the AT&T World Phone screen, not the one in the picture.

These may be the i9000 bootlaoders but previous attempts were using i897 bootloaders. I tried USB+vol up for recovery and it didn't work but vol down takes me to download mode.

And BWolf, I'll try that.

Just saw the edit. Although, I made him flash those with M9 hoping there would be some change. Sorry should've mentioned that your button combo was gonna change.

No luck. :/

Obviously, recovery is broken somehow because after flashing i'm supposed to boot into recovery, but it never does; attempting to do it manually seems repetitive and unnecessary, wouldn't you say?

Actually, after flashing KK4, it should fully reboot the phone. There's no reason for it to reboot in recovery as KK4 is used for 2 things: Flashing back to stock (to use on stock) or Flashing back to stock to clean install another ROM. In both case, you won't need to access recovery on stock KK4. It will only be needed after you flash Corn kernel to flash a custom ROM or root (if you plan to stick to 2.3.5).

I'm really outta idea here.. I don't know why it won't boot in recovery nor why it doesn't seem to want to flash anything other than JF6. Without having the phone in our hands, there's only so much we can do/guess :/

Would me showing you guys what I have tried help you at all? Like a video or something showing all my attempts so that if I'm doing anything incorrectly, you can point it out?

Maybe.

Chances are that you aren't though if your bootloaders are changing, then there's something else making it that it's not fully flashing. My guess is that something is corrupted. But if you go ahead and make a video, make it as clear as possible and don't talk in it, just have the pc/phone sound (assuming you got a mic). Clear view on Odin process would be great as well.

I'll be able to look at it after work.
