Thank you very much for the clarification. I still think though that if foxfi could work round it to get the to get the Hotspot to work, so could there be an app that beat the Verizon restriction - a patch perhaps.

I rooted my SM-N900V with the Arabic tool. I think it probably did more than just rooting because I can go to the bootloader with ease. Isn't that what unlocking the bootloader is all about? I'm not so keen yet though on flashing a custom ROM.
You could always go to the bootloader... It's called download mode. If your bootloader is unlocked the text at the top will say:
Mode: developer on the bottom line of 4 or so lines.

FoxFi doesn't get around the built in hotspot, it is an alternative hotspot program.

Hotspot is just another application. The built in application first checks to see if you are on the Verizon network... And then if your specific account with Verizon is allowed to use the hotspot. If all is well... It starts the hardware required and a control program.

3rd party apps.. Just start the hardware and the control app. They typically have to be run on a rooted phone but some use a totally different methodology and don't require root.

Thanks once again. Now I understand better.

Ok... You do not have an unlocked bootloader but you are rooted.

You can unlock the bootloader but it is not needed. Any of the 3rd party hotspot apps that require root can be used.

I'm glad to say that yesterday I succeeded in unlocking the bootloader with an app I found here at xda. I've also flashed on twrp. I'm now on the lookout for a stable Custom ROM that will give me full control of my note3.

I am personally using Jasmine 6.0.1 (it's Lollipop, not Marshmallow) and idlekernal but have also used leankernal (link available in the Jasmine 6.0.1 announcement)

Remember.. You now have a developer edition phone... So follow instructions for that.

I've downloaded Jasmine 6.1. I intend to flash it with twrp. But I don't fully understand the flashing instructions:
Quote:
BACKUP your data to external storage
REMOVE external SD card
DOWNLOAD JasmineROM_v6.1_N900VVRUEOF1.zip & CHECK MD5
REBOOT to Safestrap/TWRP recovery or OPEN FlashFire
DELETE all ROM slots & make Stock Slot active [Safestrap]
WIPE everything (system/data/cache/dalvic) or factory reset [Safestrap/TWRP]
FLASH JasmineROM_v6.1_N900VVRUEOF1.zip - BE PATIENT !

Now, if I remove the external SD card, the only other place where I can put the Jasmine ROM rar is the internal SD card. Why wouldn't it be wiped off when I later "wipe everything", according to the instructions? Thanks for your assistance.

@tanatoni

It is natural to want to continue conversing with someone in the same thread, but your question immediately above ^^^^ is now wildly off-topic.

Please ask that question in the Jasmine ROM thread or as a new thread in the Q&A section. If nobody answers, I will; it is a straightforward answer of a few sentences.

Thank you.

Because systen, data, cache and so forth are separate from the "internal SD card"

The so-called internal SD is just an emulated SD card that is a part of the internal flash memory and doesn't get wiped by TWRP when you clear the partitioned areas as advised.

The removal of the external SD card is just for safety and generally a good idea.

Don't forget.. Do NOT flash the partial firmware just to the steps for a dev edition phone and if you wish... You may also load an alternate kernal (or not)
