Frequently Asked Questions
Galaxy Tab 2
This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Q1: Why a F.A.Q. for all the tab2 models?
Because the tab 7.0(P3xx) and 10.1(P5xx) have the same internal hardware, only the screen size is different
Q2: What is the difference between P3100 and P3110/P3113 models, respectively P5xx
Px100 is the gsm model(with sim) and Px110/Px113 are Wi-Fi only models(the difference between Px110 and Px113 is that are sold in different markets and Px113 has an IR Blaster)
Q3: How do I root my tablet?Q4: What is download mode and recovery and how do I enter them?
Recovery and Download Mode are very important in the root process and also for installing custom ROMs
For entering in recovery press power+volume up while tablet is off.
There are several Recoveries:CWM(clockworkmod)(7.0 10.1) and TWRP(Team Win Recovery)(LINK)
For download mode press power and volume down. Download Mode is for flashing samsung firmwares through Kies or Odin.
Q5: What is the best ROM and stuff
NEVER ask such a thing if you don't want to start a termonuclear war, 'the best' rom depends on the user's preference
Q6: Where can I find a list of ROMs?
For a list of ROMs and other How-To go GoSooners345's Table of contents(7.0 only)here
Q7: What is ADB?
ADB stands for android debugging bridge. Find more HERE
Q8: What is Baseband and what it does?
Baseband is a part of your device and it allows you to conect to networks and stuff. Every android version has a different basebands(depends on region and carrier if any) so be careful and follow the ROM requirements to see if you have a compatible baseband

Q9: Do I need to backup my ROM before flashing another?
If you don't want to backup it then it's ok but I suggest to back it up just to be sure(safety first)
Q10: What is IR Blaster?
IR Blaster is a infrared port that allows you to use your tab as a remote control for your TV(no, you can't transfer files through it like you used to on old devices)
Q11: What is Odin?
Odin is the firmware flashing tool for Samsung smartphones. Find out more here
Q12: What is the flash counter?
The flash counter keeps track of the number of times you flashed a custom firmware on your device(doesn't apply for stock firmwares), after a number of uses you may encounter a yellow triangle on your boot screen. Fin out more and how to reset it here

Thanks for this FAQ! Good work! :good:

New to Tab and I've been reading the forums to learn the process on this thing. Completely different than my phone. So here are the things I've got as questions and have been trying to get straight in the notes I'm compiling for myself... maybe they are topics/questions that you can address in the FAQ if you feel they might be helpful to others.

1. What is a general overview of the process for the Tab? For my phone it's straightforward to me, but to newcomers it's confusing, and now the tables have turned for me.

What I've gotten so far:
- Root using Odin
- Flash CWM
- Flash ROMs using CWM, and that from this point on Odin is not necessary???

2. What is Odin? Some sort of tool... what are the reasons one uses it? What is the difference between Odin and Mobile Odin - I think I read that Mobile Odin doesn't increase your flash counter?

3. How does this flash counter work, where is it? How many, if any, times can you flash a custom ROM according to Samsung? What is "bin"? Does Triangle Away remove all traces of custom flashing?
Link I found on Triangle Away: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114

4. How does one return to stock for warranty purposes? Will there be signs of having rooted the Tab?

5. What is Kies, what is it for?

Here's a link I came across for info on Download Mode: http://forum.jakar.co/android-hack/1341265231/

That's what I got so far.

I would flash TWRP if I was you, it's much better in comparison to CWM (says me who is still running CWM on my Tab lol. I have TWRP on my HTC One V though and it's great). I am not that clued up on Odin but to meit seems like just a graphical user interface for using ADB and android SDK to flash instead of using console commands. You do not need to worry much about the process Galaxy Tab 2 is virtually un-brickable.

Tab 2 Question

I am looking into purchasing a 10.1 Tab 2 right now assuming it has the one piece of functionality I'm looking for. The model I have available to me is SGH-I497. However, I can't seem to find a definitive yes or no as to whether the device is capable of voice calls via the GSM radio. I understand that there are a lot of VOIP alternatives but I am specifically looking for GSM based calls. Anyone have any ABSOLUTELY FOR SURE yes or no answer to this?

---------- Post added at 12:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:00 AM ----------

After a fairly extensive search of the forums, I have found that it appears that this model does not support the feature set that I am looking for. As a result, I'll pass on the buy.

the only thing the app tells is"could not make video call, the fone is not using wlan" as we're using "prepaid data"

is there any solution to enable video calls or WLAN

WLAN stands for wireless lan and probably the app you are talking about prevents you from using your data plan for video calls
