I'm trying to replace the stock kernel from a Moto G6 Play (X1922-9, kernel v3.18.71) with a customized kernel that I compiled. I pulled the stock boot.img, and have tried unpackaging and repackaging it with several tools, but it either fails to boot or bootloops, even without swapping the kernel. When I look at the dmesg output, it says that it can't find /fstab.qcom. Is there something unusual about these Motorola kernels that prevents standard usage of unmkbootimg / related tools?
