To get 4.4.2 without bricking... You need to odin 4.4.2 stock tar and odin 4.4 2 compatible recovery afterwards. Any other way will lead to brick. I never have to worry about knox because the only tar i have is the 4.4.2. I flash whatever rom i want in recovery with no problems. Like Bilgerryan said knox really only affects you, if your trying to return your phone to samsung with knox tripped. Im loving 4.4.2 im glad i made the plunge.

Which leaves no room to update the recovery, since I use Philz Touch for D2LTE, it updates every month or so.
I've been using CM11 for months, so 4.4.2 is nothing special. I just wanted the phone itself to be up to date with NDC. Will flashing the modem alone be okay?

Once you have philz on 4 4 2 you can flash newest philz in recovery. And nope cant use the modem without the firmware sorry. Works both ways, once your on ndc/nd8 firmware you cant go back to mk5/mk3 modem.

If you read through any of the ND8/NDC threads you will see that a good majority of us are using the latest philz with it. It's actually the only recovery that doesn't seem to be giving any of us issues with 4.4.2.

Cant take the modem without the firmware...? Strange. I know you can't downgrade, but the last time I flashed a new philz in recovery, it did something with re-rooting the phone and it hard-bricked because of KNOX.

I use Philz religiously, its not a matter of using it or installing it, its a matter of updating it once KNOX is on.

I've updated philz at least 3 or 4 times since installing 4.4.2.

Last time I had KNOX, I flashed a new recovery ZIP and bricked the phone. I don't want to tip-toe around KNOX if its there, I dont want to have to worry about it all together. If I just flash the Modem, will I get KNOX or will it just update the PRL and such?
Well I'll let you go on living in your Knoxless bubble. But I don't see it going away any time soon.

Me Four. When you Odin the tar to upgrade to ND8 or NDC, you get the bootloader, modem, Samsung 4.4.2 TouchWiz Unrooted Rom and the basically useless stock recovery.

I rebooted and played with stock for a few minutes. Then I went back to Odin and flashed the newest Philz tar.

Then I updated to newest Philz zip.

Then I backed up Unrooted Stock.

Then I flashed Wicked-X.

No bricks.

Nothing fancy, just the Boost/VM variant of 4.4.2 Kit Kat tar, captured from Kies.

NOTE: For those Boost/VM users who flashed the Sprint ND8 version, this WILL flash successfully over the ND8 bootloader.

- This will (should) not wipe your data.

- As with everything, you are responsible for what you do to your device.

- I have Deodexed and Odexed rooted stock zips ready to test if someone wants to give them a go. Let me know.

Download Link

Instructions:

1. Download file to your PC(somewhere you can find it!)
2. Put your phone into Download/Odin mode
3. Start Odin(I suggest the latest, 3.09 is out now I think, I used 3.07)
4. Click on PDA, find tar file, click it to put it into PDA slot
5. Click Start
6. Takes a good 15 minutes, so sit back and chill. It will reboot on it's own, and you now have Kit Kat.

Oh, and because I know someone will ask, YES, this does have the Knox bootloader on it :)
Link does not work anymore. Please upload it again.
Thanks.

HI, Just wondering if you can tell me why the flash is failing using odin, I am trying to bring my boost gs3 back because after rooting and flashing sprint rom nd8, my screen became upside down in landscape so I want to restore it but for some reason it keeps saying failed, any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the L710T model? Check your Settings/More/About Phone and see what the baseband is... If it is NDC, disregard everything above. If it is not NDC, stop now, or you could ruin your device.

If it is NDC, the most common reasons for an Odin fail are a bad cable or bad port on the computer.

My ROM: WICKED X

I flashed a custom recovery (CWM) and now I want to go back to the stock recovery (unroot device). I'm still using the stock ROM; I never changed it. I did this before activating service to the phone. I was unable to use the hands free activation; Virgin had to manually program it. Since then, I have been unable to get LTE service and "System Upodate..." appears in my notifications.

I want to undo any changes Clockworkmod made to my device and restore it to factory so that I can attempt to reactivate it with Virgin and (hopefully) start getting 4G LTE service like I used to.

Will flashing this to my phone accomplish this? I'm not sure if my baseband version is right for this file. My "about device" menu shows baseband: L710VPUCNJ3; I don't see anything referencing NDC or ND8.

Also, I am new to this so I want to be sure what I'm doing is right, I'm not as comfortable doing modifications to my phone as some of you are. I also don't know all the initialisms, so bare with me.
Thanks!

You are on the newest firmware (just came out). I wouldn't recommend using this as attempts to downgrade the Bootloader usually end up in the phone being a paperweight. You'll have to wait for somebody to grab the NJ3 tar. CWM would not make ANY changes to your device other than the recovery. It would not cause the problems you're having.
