I was afraid of that - stupid Niantic - looking like I'd be better off just getting my daughter a new low budget phone and just leave it un-rooted - she really wants to be able to play Pokemon Go - thank you for all the help and advice -

Pretty sure there are ways to play that while rooted. RootCloak, Magisk, Xposed modules, etc. Just had to do it so many son could play Super Mario Run (I used RootCloak).

For my wife, I flashed lineage os ROM, it comes unrooted. But the build prop is still a problem. So I flashed their root add-on zip, then installed the app isu ( available here on XDA using XDA labs app) it allows you to change build prop, and actually shows you which ones to change. Then has a switch to disable root. Sounds like more work than it actually is. It's a pretty clean system and is Android nougat with all the latest security patches.

So here's my situation. My mom needs a new Virgin Mobile phone, her old one no longer works. I had a perfectly working but unused Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3 stock. Unfortunately after moving her account to this phone I see it never got an official firmware update beyond Kit-Kat. As a result many apps she uses like Uber Eats won't even install on the phone, they simply don't even show up in the app store. However with a newer OS they show fine. The phone is in damn near perfect condition but they never did a newer firmware. I thought I'd have nothing to lose by installing a newer firmware after rooting. Unfortunately the download link to the tar file in the original post is no longer working. It will take you to a download page but the download pages says "no mirrors found" when you try to download. Does anyone have a working link? I tried to google search for it elsewhere but found no working links, just the checksum,.

Or does anyone have a way to update this phone even beyond Lollipop? There seem to be lots of modern phones with near equal specs that run even newer versions of Android.

Thank you.

I may still have the original TAR for the S3 VM. I've switched over to newer phones since then (on refurb Pixel 2 XL on Google Fi & love it). You are correct that the S3 never got an official update past 4.4x. I used to use latest CyanogenMod on it for some time on 5.x and it worked well. There are some scripts you had to run after installing a custom ROM, however, in order to get VM LTE to work. I don't remember all the details. Of course, after CM's demise, LineageOS had some ROMs but it then became unsupported. The phone felt very sluggish installing Oreo after Lollipop.

In any case, you don't really need the original TAR. I suggest you browse here & find a good stable Lollipop ROM, install TWRP, and just wipe everything & perform a clean install.
