New to the S9 and the forum. Been reading through this thread (great btw) and I'm looking to update my S9 on Android 8.0 to 9.0.
I'm in Canada on Bell network, but I bought an unlocked phone from a cell store.
Smart Switch says it's up to date, but obviously I'm still on 8.0, so that's no help.
I don't need any Bell (or any other carrier) bloatware, just want an unlocked phone on 9.0.

Here is my S9's build number: R16NW.G960USQU3ARG7
I'm not sure if this was a US phone originally. The "Service provider SW ver." is SAOMC_SM-G960U_OYN_XAA_OO_0041
I suspect the phone was flashed before I got it.

I downloaded the Odin 3B patched version in the OP, and I went to the U1 firmware folder, with the following subfolders: RB7, RBG, RH7, and RJ2
I would like to keep the data I have on the phone, so I don't want the "wipe" file.

Am I going to the RJ2 folder next and using the file HOME_CSC_OMC_OYM_G960U1OYM3ARJ2_CL13916502_QB20099189_REV01_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.zip?

Any other info or steps I'm missing?

1. As has been clarified in the thread, the firmware in the OP is old - they're all Android 8 builds. I don't upload every single version that comes out, for reasons which have been stated. So you need to use the other sources mentioned in the thread, in order get a 9.0 build

2. You can't go from U to U1 without wiping - it's simply not an option. But there are plenty of data backup and restore options to use these days

Is there anything special done to convert the U to the U1 on Galaxy S9?
Depends on what you mean by "special", I guess. Basically, you just put the phone in Download mode and flash the correct files with Odin. Whether you consider that "special", I don't know

Thanks for the info. I was thinking if I went from U to U1 that the phone may automatically receive 9.0 for an update. Right now it doesn't want to update to 9.0.
I'm thinking it's a US phone, could I go from U to W? If you happen to know.
I found the SM-G960W 9.0 original firmware...so I'm thinking to use the unpatched Odin to update it to that.

Yes, you can flash W firmware to U models. I don't know what Odin version may be needed though

After several (several) hours of trial and error, I was able to flash my S9 from SM-G960U to SM-G960W using the patched Odin 3B.
I found a Canada (XAC) file on Sanmobile from August 20th, 2019 that was both the W firmware and Android 9...so the flash accomplished two things: moved me from Android 8 to 9 and from U to W.
I still have Samsung Pay, which doesn't work in Canada (I think it's a licensing issue) and I had two Virgin Mobile apps pop up...which I Disable'd so you don't see them aesthetically.

So far so good. I'm going to try this out for now, and worse case flash the W to U1 if I have any issues.

Thanks for the info iBowToAndroid and the others that have posted on this thread.

Use SamFirm to download firmware next time. It takes 1/100th of the time that SamMobile does

Lol...definitely not. I guess i just caught it at the right time...plus my home internet is pretty quick (it's fiber). I was surprised how fast it downloaded too.
Your download speed doesn't matter, because they limit your bandwidth if you're just a regular Free member. Full firmwares take like 6+ hours for non-paying members. I guess it glitched and you lucked out :)

Damn...6+ hours...wow! I definitely lucked out. I saw that they throttle it back for free members, but I guess I'm just used to stuff downloading quick, so i really didn't pay much attention to the speed.
The time I wasted was trying the original Odin and another firmware I downloaded. I had downloaded a couple to try out.
I also went looking for the SamFirm like you suggested, but my Windows Security shot that down claiming a virus was detected.
I know some of these types of programs will trip the virus detection, just not familiar with this one, so didn't take the chance.
