I have problems rooting my Samsung A71.

1. In the guide it says ' if you don't want to unlock bootloader ' , however this guy is to root your phone isn't it? But OP posted a reply saying you CANNOT root without unlocking bootloader, so why is that option there, and is that option vital for making the root work in the first place???

2. I did all steps ( except for the not unlocking bootloader part ) but I get stuck on bootloop. I tried using the 2 files from .tar , with a clean boot.img and patched and everything, still bootlooped after using Odin. )
.

i had exactly the same thoughtsabout the NOT UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER
very confusing

can somebody create a troubleshooting post where and why a bootloop occurs and how to solve the issues !

thanks

Well, i'm just going to say what needs to be said: The process, in general, is flawed and needs to be fixed at it's root (Magisk) where the process can actually get back to working the way the guide says so 10+ pages of frustration and aggravation can be avoided. I have read all 11 pages. Listened to people who claimed their process worked then people who "altered" the process and it worked, ect, ect, ect. Cyber Axes does, without a double and i explained in the next post why.

Fix the original process at it's root (pun maybe needed) so these work-arounds aren't necessary.

As an alternative I've been going back and forth with ([email protected])...

....and that guy gave me zero "real" answers. He kinda danced around things, asking me for information, once even forgot who i was and i had to start over on things, and finally said "We made it work here, this morning, on an A71 Samsung". But the odd thing was, the screen-capture he sent me.....the date listed (on the screen cap) was from the previous month (06/13/2020).

Does that make the guy just dumb, a liar, or what? I just dunno....

I mean i would ask the guy direct questions and he would answer my questions with questions or just avoid the answering.

I'm still trying to figure his whole deal. Finally, i asked him "what guide did you use? what's the link?" and I've yet to get an answer from him. I mean, it almost seems like the guy "doesn't" know, especially with showing me a root-tester screen shot a month old and claiming it was yesterday it was done.....like i wouldn't notice or something.

I miss the older XDA days when the rooting process was more.....solid. These extra steps, they just need to fix the whole process where you don't have to jump through hoops.

Ok ladies and gentlemen I finally got it working, and here's what I had to do

You'll need to install 7zip or something that handles TARs and LZ4 that you can grab from github it was the second result on google for me

Once you've patched the AP file in Magisk Manager and copy it back to your pc, Open up that tar file and delete all files except recovery.img and vbmeta.img

Then open the original prepatched AP file in 7Zip and extract the boot.img.lz4 then take that file and drag it onto the lz4.exe from the lz4 utilities

you should now have a nice clean uncompressed boot.img, put that back onto the phone and patch it with magisk manager, you should now have magisk_patched.img copy that back to the pc and rename it boot.img and put it in the tar file from earlier so you should have boot.img recovery.img and vbmeta.img

With just these 3 files in the tar you dont have to worry about wiping your data again and it will patch pretty fast

Open up ODIN again and select AP and choose your new tar file and flash it

Then shut down the phone fully and power it on while holding vol up till you get to the warning screen about the unlocked bootloader let go of vol up and press power to continue and you should find that it boots properly now and magisk manager will show that magisk is installed.

Your technique works, without a "doubt", and anyone that says otherwise....they did it wrong.

Oh, i had moments where i missed one or two steps and forgot to do something specific but, once i re-read over the guide, i realized my mistakes and it worked.

Some people don't realize you have to go into recovery and "mount" after doing your guide.
Some people don't read the part about the PWR+VOL UP to get it into "magisk" mode.

But once you see that "Samsung" notice come up (after the bootloader unlock warning screen and the Warning screen about not running a Samsung system) you know you've made it. Head to your favorite root checker and it will verify.

Still, that being said, some people are immensely "visually" driven so photos plus text work better and a top-to-bottom guide needs to be re-written and posted. This is not an insult to Cyber Axe or anyone else it's just that some (like me) have a problem getting sentences sometimes jumbled and a more visual guide works better.

yeah man also this is not very good structured

i try to summerize

download firmware >>copy Ap from firmware to phone >> patch with magisx >> from the patched file extract everything but the 2 files recovery/vbmeta >>copyback to PC and insert boot img from unpatched AP into theTAR ( or do you mean patch the boot img separatly ) and then copy into tar >> use odinto flash ap and disable reboot

Then shut down the phone fully and power it on while holding vol up till you get to the warning screen about the unlocked bootloader let go of vol up and press power to continue

also this is unclear .. power on with vol up ok but keep pressing vol up or release every button after it turns on

I honestly don't think it cares as long as you have the correct firmware. There is software called Frija (version 1.4.2 to this date i believe) that's much faster about downloading firmware than the mother website and Samsung. I've not heard anyone say "don't use it on whatever version of the phone" because mine is international with firmware from Guatemala and i'm in the USA.

https://samfrew.com/model/SM-A715F/region/SEK/

WARNING: You can't downgrade anymore once you flashed U2 update !

You will need:

-Galaxy A71 Latest USB Driver
https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/others/android-usb-driver-for-windows
After installing the USB driver my windows7 tries installing MTP wich fails every time.
So even before continuing doing anything, i cant even connect to my pc :crying:

Edit: solved!

Check the cable. Often, cables are bad or you might be using a charge cable to do a data cable's job.
No, cable is okay, i know the diference between charge and data cables, i had to force windows not to look in windows update, but force to look on hdd, and than force to choose specific hardware. (MTP USB Device)
It is solved.
In fact, for others may have this problem when MTP refuses to be installed:
Choose: Method 2: Update Device Driver
(Use METHOD 2 step 1 to 7 ! )

So you're saying Windows 7 recognizes the phone but not as a MTP device? The odd thing is, when you install the correct Samsung drivers, it should automatically recognize and use those pre-installed drivers. Are you sure your drivers are the correct ones? When i used Win 7 and planned to root the phone, i would pre-install the Samsung drivers and it was always a snap.

Of course i know about samsung drivers first installation, they installed before for my old phone and lineage_OS etc. They are up to date.
Im no newbie, but for some reason i could connect all old Samsung phones, except when connecting the A71, pc went for updating drivers online. So i was already beyond the point you talk about...
Dont ask me why, but in such cases you have to follow the " Method 2" thing as i referred to.
Problem solved.

It's not really that i was curious about, just what you did to (cause) come to your problem in the first place. Oh well. No biggie.

Okay, this method is working for me except the last, but i solved it:
I patched the AP file in Magisk Manager, copied back to my pc, opened the tar file with 7zip and deleted all files except recovery.img and vbmeta.img.
I opened the original prepatched AP file in 7Zip and extracted the boot.img.lz4 and dragged it to lz4.exe.
I copied the uncompressed boot.img to my phone and patched it in magisk manager, copied back the patched file to my pc and put it in the tar file, flashed with odin (before flashing I unticked the auto reboot), after it's done, I pressed and held volume down and power and when the screen went off, quickly changed to volume up and power button and hold until the bootloader warning appeared, I released the buttons, and I pressed the power button to continue to samsung logo, and my phone got bootloop (after a few seconds).
After it restarts and the screen went off I quickly pressed and held the volume up and power button until the bootloader warning appeared again, pressed the power button, and after the samsung logo appeared, quickly pressed and held the volume up until the stock recovery does not appear -> stock recovery -> mount system -> reboot to the system -> hold volume up and power button (!) -> bootloader warning - press power button to continue -> samsung logo -> press and hold the volume up until the recovery does not appear -> recovery -> reboot to the system -> wait until the bootloader warning (and do not press and hold volume up and power (!) ) -> press the power to continue -> samsung logo, and wait and the phone is booted and working with magisk root. If you reboot the phone or shutdown it, magisk root is still working without pressing volume up and power.

    @BK
Thanks for the share, would be appreciated if you can mention how to update over OTA when we have root the phone. Thanks.

The reason it's not mentionned is simply because we can't, we just need to download latest firmware and patch it with magisk.

topjohnwu stated ( and i tested it myself ) that if we flash the latest OTA it will brick the device, which is logic.

We need to patch the latest firmware with magisk, if we go from a rooted environment to a non rooted it will brick.

I hope i cleared your thoughs. :cowboy:

I've tried rooting several times to no avail, I've unlocked and flashed everything with the patched magisk setup, I'm using the SM-A715F BTU firmware as that's what my phone was beforehand

When i try and do the volume up boot then release at the warning screen it just does a reboot cycle and never boots I have to force it it shut down and boot normally

I cant even restore phone to a point where SafetyNet validates so no Pokemon Go and such
