I was debating over the same thing decided to go with the S3. It was definitely the better choice.
Yes you do, I have a nexus which will get rid of soon to get my ipad back(someone stole it) and the IMEI is a known problem for gsm users tooLocked bootloader or not, at least with the GN you don't have to worry about borking your phone's IMEI from flashing roms/kernels.
Currently there are many roms I'd like to flash, but due to the numerous replacements needed by people who have lost their IMEI I hold off. I understand that flashing has risks associated it with it but coming from a OG Incredible where I could go flash happy without fear (pretty experienced at flashing stuff) this just seems ridiculous.
If this issue does not get solved then it won't matter if Verizon's bootloader is locked. I really hope we can determine the cause or find a way to recover lost IMEI numbers. There have been no successful cases of recovery.
So there it is. GS3 is supremely superior hardware but the GN offers a normal amount of peace of mind when flashing roms and kernels. Of course the GN has a large developer base too, something this phone is beginning to nurture but will not retain should this IMEI issue go unresolved.
