Some news...

New versions:

I have updated the main post with the recommended versions we use on the Telegram group (latest from Wichaya, Nikita, Arnova8G2 (beta), and Greatness). I picked Wichaya's apk as the "recommended" one, but this is just a suggestion for new users and/or for people that don't want to spend time testing.

Some people prefer Arnova8G2 and Nikita, which are great versions too, but they all create similar photos and have similar settings (the main difference is between the Arnova8G2 vs Urnyx05 base). I suggest that you all test and pick the one you think it's best for your usage.

I didn't add the latest from Urnyx05 as it still has some issues on the Nord (eg: front wide + hdr enhanced). Both Wichaya's and Greatness' versions are based on his mod and have these fixes, so if you like his apk, using a version from these two guys should be a good replacement.

Thread updates:

I no longer have my Nord, so I won't be able to create config files or anything like that. This thread isn't thread though. I'll keep an eye here and on the telegram group to see how things are going and keep the main post up-to-date.

Please report bugs, share your configs, leave feedback, etc, to help with this.

GCam 8:

The first mods based on GCam 8 are out. For the Nord, Arnova's version seems to be best one (can be found on his thread or this page). It's important to understand that this is a beta version. It's not as stable as GCam 7 or has the same number of features. I don't recommend using it as your main camera app.

Sadly, a lot of the code is now obfuscated. I'm not sure if it's caused by the new split apk format that Google now uses or if they decided to make it harder to mod GCam. In any case, it is way harder to mod GCam 8 than it was with previous versions.

I know Arnova8G2 and BSG have been working very hard to make it usable, so if you talk with them, don't forget to say "thanks".

OnePlus, Android 11, and Aux support:

As some of you know, 3rd party cameras can't access the auxiliary cameras on some OnePlus phones (including the Nord) without root under normal conditions. "eszdman" found a way to do this without root, that's why current GCams can use all lenses on the Nord. Sadly, it seems that OnePlus broke this with Android 11.

There's no need to "panic" yet as the Nord is still on Android 10, but it's something to keep in mind if any of you is thinking about buying this or any other OnePlus phone. Not only you can't access the full resolution with GCam, but you also may have to use root just to access the extra cameras. One of the modders is even considering dropping support for OnePlus if this doesn't get fixed...

I don't see what is OnePlus trying to do here. One one hand, some of their staff recommend using GCam on their own forums because they know OnePlus processing isn't the best. On the other, they introduce these weird limitations...

In comparison, GCam can use all cameras and full resolution on the Asus' Zenfone line. Xiaomi also likes to limit the full resolution, but the extra cameras usually work well on phones with GCam support.

Anyway... as I said, not a problem right now for the Nord, but keep in mind that Android 11 may introduce new limitations.

In practice would you gain anything by having access to the full resolution of the sensor? Judging by the default camera which does, the 48MP images are actually a bit worse than the 12MP ones in most cases. Maybe Gcam with its heavy processing would give a better result. What the situation on the Asus, does access to the 48MP sensor produce better results?

48MP has better details when you zoom in, but it only works well in well lit places. I don't use it indoors, but it's nice to be able to use it outside during the day.

GCam struggles a bit to capture and process 48MP because it uses a lot of memory. It's not as smooth as 12MP, but it works.

Two examples from early this year. I wanted to see which one was better for things like text. Left: 12MP; Right: 48MP.

I have mixed feelings about the first (and maybe second too) generation of high MP sensors. To work well in all conditions, we need to use 12MP and no stock camera app switches to 48MP if conditions are good. Feels like a marketing thing to sell more phones... like the number of extra cameras.

With GCam, sometimes you can get better photos with an older phone (eg: OP3/3T or 6/6T) than with these new phones with a Sony IMX586 + 12MP. 48MP is better, but we can't use it all the time or at all on phones like the Nord.

I don't know if it's the sensor itself that isn't as good when pixel binning (12MP) is used or if it's just GCam that isn't optimised for this type of sensors (Google still uses the Sony IMX363 on their phones). Either way, I'm not super happy.

I assume the 48MP image is zoomed 1:1 and the 12MP is upsampled to the same size. Yeah the difference is obvious and this could be useful since we don't have a telephoto lens (would have been a much better addition than the macro lens). By the way if you want to upscale images I highly recommend Topaz gigapixel. It's way ahead of everything else.
On the other hand 48MP shots end up about 3 times the size of 12MP and this combined with the need for good light really limits their usefulness. Still, I'd like to have the option. Could someone make a magisk module (like the one enabling all cameras) for enabling access to the full resolution too?

Regarding high MP sensors. Marketing is definitely a large part of it. However their is substance too.

Pixel binning samples colors more uniformly across the area of each pixel giving (in theory) more accurate results. Not all sensors use this filter though.

Regarding Gcam, I'd definitely agree that we'll get better results if/when google uses then new Sony sensor. Modders can only do so much.

Got my Nord today. First impression: Even with the "best" settings and configs on the Nord, OnePlus 3T destroys Nord in every aspect. Absolutely undisputed truth. Note that OP3T costed almost same (3.5 years back) as what Nord costs today. That's a good comparison of rate of Inflation versus Tech.

As someone who was passionate with mobile photography on a budget, and almost never let down by the 3T, Nord feels like a disappointing downgrade. Yes, I was fully aware that Nord didn't have great cameras, but I thought 3 years of development and a better sensor would bring something to the table, at least with the main camera. But nope, not so far. Hoping future updates address these shabby implementations.
Hello, I felt exactly the same when I switched from my OP3T to the Nord a few months ago.
This feeling of "downgrade" with the Nord camera compared to the 3T is obvious and despite the rest of the qualities of the Nord, it is a huge disappointment.
I will test the GCam mod without having too many illusions.

Hi, can you test out the Gcam of Nord thoroughly and comment on how does it perform against the 3T?

I have issues with latest apk-s from Arnova and Greatness, I also tried the recommended .xml-s but still failed. Please see attached picture and notice the flakes prodused at the dark zones of the images.

latest well working copy I used is: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1148/
Looks like the noise issue is mostly fixed in Arnova's GCcam 8 beta mode. Though it still has some errors, it works better than Gcam 7.0. My opinion.
