The Gcam is great for a start, the photos are already so much nicer colours than the Native. It will be great when the compatibility is improved with ultra wide, improved macro and portrait!

Yes @Silverb the Parrot Cam works great, looks great. Everything except ultra wide (and macro that no one will use)

checked Arnova8G2's version and it looks good already. now we need also a version that works with the ultrawide camera. thanks again for sharing, and looking forward to new versions made specifically for our beloved OPNs.
Did you try Urnyx05's version? According to a Reddit post, this version can access the Ultrawide camera on the OnePlus 8 without root.

Any samples / comparisons / verdict on wide angle cameras (front and back) and macro camera? All major reviews (MKBHD, Dave Lee etc..) have called out the worthlessness of basically all the Nord aux cameras.

It's probably too early to comment, but I feel if there is no value addition by GCam to these cameras, I feel the Pixel 4a makes more sense, speaking in terms of camera performance alone?

I would say, the Primary cam is decent, as we all know with the Sony IMX. The GCam app does improve the colours with much more vibrancy IMA but future updates may change that.
The wide angle colours are similar to the primary stock, it lacks resolution when zooming in but takes clear photos. But who takes a wide angle to zoom in, seems counter-productive?

The Macro is a waste of space. Resolution is poor and colours are horrific. The primary sensor takes better close up/cropped shots.

I would probably agree the Pizel 4a takes better standard photos, but I would prefer the Nord as an overall phone. I don't think the 4a will last more than a year without getting bogged down and glitchy with the SD730 and 6gb. Also the tiny battery barely lasts a day now, what will it be like in years time?

If you want a decent camera for the money then buy the Sony ZV1 or A5100 camera.

In my Opinion:
Screen - Nord
Speed - Nord
Design - Nord
Battery - Nord
Rear Primary Camera - Pixel
Rear Wide Angle - Nord
Macro - 8TPro
Front Primary - Probably Pixel
Front Wide - Nord

I think with the right configuration of GCam to utilise the Wide angle and front, the Nord could compete with the pixel. That is beyond me though.

I have tried a few different versions of the GCam from various developers, including those recommended here, and the result has been very poor.

Many are closed when there is low light or night mode is activated. And in those that work the night mode, the result is much worse than that of the stock camera. And unfortunately, it is not only worse in night mode. Daytime photos also come out better with the stock camera.

I come from a Xiaomi Mi 8, where the GCam did wonders, and the current one, the GCam in the OnePlus Nord, is very far from what it achieves in the Mi 8.

I sincerely hope that it will be resolved over time. But considering that it is the same camera as that of the OnePlus 8, that is, that it already has a good development time behind, I have little hope.

Thank you

First, thank you for this thread.

Coming from a line of pixel phones, I some times get a bit disappointed about the results from the camera, especially the HDR processing and the inconsistency in the results .

I use a GCam port now, which i personally think makes quite a positive difference.

But, does anyone know why Oneplus doesn't fix the image quality in their camera app? I'm not a developer, but isn't it possible for oneplus developers to read something from the google camera app code, and make a similar result in quality since the gcam app can do it with the existing hardware?

From my perspective the quality of the phone is 100% ok, it's only the image quality that lags behind.
Thank you in advance

I just did a test with the GCam on the Nord and shared a video with the results.

In most situations, G Cam managed to deliver a better image than what you can get from the stock camera app on the OnePlus Nord. The pictures from the stock app are a bit brighter, but when you take a closer look, often times the highlights are blown out and subtle details and textures aren't as clear. The G Cam's computational photography manages to capture more dynamic range, preserving a lot more of the fine detail, delivering more refined photos.

Google's camera app also has the advantage in most low light situations and that's also where its Night Sight feature truly comes to life. The Night scape mode on the Nord is pretty good, but it's nowhere near what the G Cam can deliver. On the flip side, if you're not using the dedicated low light capture more on either device, the Nord's camera performs best in extreme light light situations.

As for selfies, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The stock app seems to perform better in well-lit situations while G Cam produces crisper images in portrait mode with better definition between the subject and the background and sharper images and in low light
