Gear Watch Designer - Notifications

I see there are several watch faces in the store that show notifications like a number on the messages app to show the number of unread items. I emailed a couple developers but they have not gotten back to me. Is there something I am missing in gear watch designer that makes this happen or does someone know how to do this in GWD or are they using the tizen sdk to make these faces?
