Getting 5G/VoLTE working on SM-N9860 (HK Note 20 Ultra 5G)

Search This thread
here in greece the icon 5G appears but it has low speeds and also while it supports 5G the speed writes 4G LTE.
Please test the 5G in SpeedTest and open Service Mode to see the bands details while using the mobile data.
If the location you're in doen't get good and stable 5G signa strength
Then the phone will force back to use 4G.
You can check this in service mode.

Hello everyone

I received a notification yesterday to do an OTA update to the latest firmware (TGY).

Having at last enjoyed 5G with EE (UK) thanks to the amazing work by @xUtsumi @kent800129 and @bocsta (y)(y)(y), I am reluctant to update in case Samsung takes back the whitelist option and blocks 5G once more.

Has any brave person tried it?

Thanks!

VersionAndroid 11
Changelist21258148
Build dateMon, 29 Mar 2021 10:26:59 +0000
Security Patch Level2021-04-01
Product codeTGY
PDAN9860ZSU2DUCB
CSCN9860OZS2DUCB

I applied the update yesterday, but did not check for 5G function on EE. Today I discovered that 5G had become disabled, but the whitelist setting is still available and selecting it does restore 5G on EE following a reboot.

Short test this morning....

Thank you both @tdodd and @xUtsumi. Indeed the update brings back the whitelist but it can be removed as before.

Also good news, I don't notice any slower speeds, still around 300Mbps in my area. Happy days 👏

Did you have to modify any settings to get 5g working on EE or was it just the new update?
I had to change the Whitelist setting to enable EE 5G. I've also made other changes in the past to things like MIMO and DRX and 5G Prune. I don't know if any of these are necessary for EE specifically. I would guess not.

However, I have actually reverted the settings to stock as I really have no need for 5G and I was suspicious that battery life was taking a downturn with all these tweaks. Maybe its in my imagination as there are too many variables to pin down a definitive villain, but the phone works well on 4G+ so I'm happy with that.

With the lastest update, circa end of June, it seems removal of whitelist not required as 5g still showing after update

Anyone else confirm ?

@tdodd @xUtsumi

Did Samsung or EE UK bring back the 5G whitelist for N9860? I just realised that I no longer have 5G and access code *#*#27663368378#*#* t9 access the service menu via Google dialer no longer works.

Has anyone else had this problem? I am on TGY 1st October 2021 security patch. Many thanks

I have not performed any speed testing, but I continue to see the 5G symbol on EE where I would expect to see it. I have not tinkered with the service menu settings for several months. I'm also on October TGY.
Hey is your 5G working with Andriod 12 ONE U.I 4.1 ? Please if you could let me know!

I'm on 4.1 (April security patch) TGY firmware installed on 17th April and still have 5G showing up on EE. I just tried a speed test with nPerf and that showed a 4G+ connection, even though the phone showed the 5G symbol. Using Speedtest app it does show a 5G connection, but speeds are rubbish where I live.

Just got tag in this post and take a look around.
Congratulate for getting 5G on this stupid Samsung phones.
And as I know it should work on G98x0 N98x0 and S21 G99x0 by using this method
As these models share same logic on modem settings.

As I know when a software upgeade, the settings may roll back
and you may need to perform these steps again if 5G won't work.

I installed OneUI 3.0 today on my TGY phone.

CA/4G+/LTE+ still works without service menu adjustments, but the 4G+ sensitivity is not as strong as it was with the adjustments I had made before. Even so, I saw download speeds up to 200+Mbps today on 4G and 4G+.

VoLTE works out of the box.

Wi-Fi calling works out of the box.

I still do not see any hint of 5G on the EE network in the UK. Coverage maps suggest that there should be 5G where I travelled today, but absolutely nothing showed on the phone or nPerf.

Service menu access through the phone dialer no longer works so it is not possible to make previous adjustments.

    Finally we have 5G !!!
    Great news
Whitelist exists and needs to be removed.

Thanks to xUtsumi and Kent800129 !!!

I did that, but in the settings I still see TGY, it didn't change to BRI.

Yes my settings still show TGY (as it was originally) as well but flashing BRI fixed the 5G connectivity issue

    Thanks @bocsta, @xUtsumi and @kent800129

I successfully received a 5G signal on o2 after months!!

I just saw main menu and [5] RF TEST.

I tapped on [5] RF TEST - ANT TEST SETTING and then pressed back (three dots) to get the menu (UE SETTING & INFO) to show up.

Then as @xUtsumi suggested, I proceeded to do this. UE Settings>Protocol>GCF>Remove NR Whitelisting.

    A reboot later and I have 5G. :)
