Settled with this one for now. It goes just perfect on the right side of the screen if one uses the left-aligned time/date/battery (remember cover screen pics are resizable and movable, so you can position it as you please). RTL readers might go the opposite way, though.

Actually, I just got this amazing idea. Got these hi-res GIFs of my favorite pokémon from https://professorlotus.com/ and now I have a different creature onscreen every time I check my notifications
GIFs are amazing, seriously. Take a look at Rapidash, i.e.

All the GIFs are background-free, so they look great on the OLED screen.
