The difference is very minor I'm running alpha CM7 which is based on 2.3. In my view gingerbread was just another selling point for the nexus s apon its release. The only feature I like and use is the text selector. It's not worth rooting for 2.3, its only worth rooting for custom roms.

What do you mean rooting is not worth it? Rooting is free. If something is free it can't be not worth it.

Rooting takes time and effort, voids your warranty (depending on how you do it), can cause instability (based on incorrect configurations), and allows potentially-malicious applications to access portions of the system that would otherwise be off-limits. Even though rooting doesn't cost any money, I could see these issues as being enough for someone to decide it's just not worth the effort and risk.

Back on topic, I was very pleased with several of the Gingerbread ROMs that I tried out so far, and am still looking forward to the official release, whenever that does happen.

I , too, am running CM7 on my N1. For those you want 2.3 and are rooted, here are the steps (I'm not responsible for you messing your device up or you didn't backup before wipe):

1) Go to http://phones.crackflashers.com/passion
2) Download gingerbread-gapps-12302010.zip, d6096cac5e9f.signed-hboot-0.35.0017.zip, B#45-passion-cm7src-grid-eng.zip (Gaaps, hboot, cm7 build)
3) Move the three to /mnt/sdcard
4) Reboot into recovery, wipe delvik cache, cache, data (if you don't know how, stop here and disregard this post)
5) Install from zip - d6096cac5e9f.signed-hboot-0.35.0017.zip
6) Reboot into recovery and install the other two from zip (build and gapps)
7) Reboot, enjoy
