hi, I have a Moto G 2015 which I got from my mother, complete with a glass screen protector. but it so happens that the screen protector was apparently screwing up with touchscreen detection, so I removed it and the problem was gone. I know other two people with Moto G 2015 and glass screen protectors and they also report the same kind of issues. is this a widely known problem? do any of you use glass screen protectors without problems?

Yes, it's known problem on Stock Marshmallow.
Two fix for this problem:
1) Don't use any tampered glass.
2) If you want to use tampered glass then Flash the zip using TWRP recovery from this post link

great info, thanks! just one question: since it is a problem on stock marshmallow, will I still experience it if I'm using a custom ROM?
No problem in any custom rom.
That touch problem is already fixed in all custom rom using old touch driver which was provided in zip by Alberto97.
