I think Lander3's solution has worked for me.
His solution is below:
Go to Settings -> Apps
Click the : Menu in top right, select -> [Special Access]
Select > Optimize Battery Usage ->
Click the dropdown menu towards the top of the screen that says: "Apps not optimized [v]" -> change to [All Apps]
Add any application you want to get notifications for without delay, all the time. Eg, Chrome, Gmail, Facebook, etc.
Thanks!
This is strange. I've got my VZW S8 Regular (with SIM) sitting next to my VZW S6 Flat (WiFi only -- no SIM)--both on 7.0. If I send an email to my Gmail acct from my computer, they are both long delayed (one-three minutes) before receiving the msg.
However, my Pixel C (WiFi only) sitting here as well, receives the msg virtually immediately.
A BIT MORE INFO: So, I rebooted both the S8 and the S6, sent another email from my computer, and all three devices--S6, S8, Pixel C--received the msg immediately. But, when I sent another msg (I did not open Gmail or touch any of the three devices) a minute after the first, the Pixel C received immediately, but both the S6 nor the S8 had a long delay in receiving the msg.
That is, immediately after reboot, the msg was received immediately / as usual. But, sending a subsequent msg a minute, or two, later yielded a two minute delay in msg receipt.
Here is how you can fix it:

It's an Android 7.0 Nougat issue.
I'm not seeing that option. Am I missing something?I had the same issue when I first set up my Gmail. I just went into the Gmail app settings > click on your account under "Accounts" > scroll down to "Sync Schedule" and set to "Auto (when received)". I thought this would be set by default, but I had to go in and change it manually.
Just disable sync and enable againYUP. on my new S8 I've tried everything, every setting, nothing corrects it. Verizon tech support (Tier 2) couldn't even figure it out. in the end they suggested i go to one of their stores to see if someone there can physically fix it. or request a replacement phone. seriously? i just got this phone!
Use Inbox by Gmail. It will solve your issue.

When you get new phone it's better to fresh install apps rather than transfer over. Reduces issues I've found in past.
