gold pin connectors // usb docking

Hey y'all, just a quick question that might lead to further discussion:

Do the gold pin connectors on the side (and by extension, the official Sony dock) support USB data?
I'm hoping the answer is yes, but anticipating no. This brings up a second bit I want to discuss:

If the gold pins are only for charging, and the only way to physically "connect" with the phone is in the covered USB slot, how will we get any fitted docks that can do anything more than just charge the phone?

I'm thinking docks for a desktop or car for syncing or music purposes.
