Splendid. Thanks again I'll try this tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to install lineage and get WiFi calling working.
Ok everything seemed to go fine till I tried to install gapps (following the guide on the lineage site). After doing the adb sideload lineage.zip i couldn't execute adb reboot sideload followed by adb sideload gapps.zip (My filenames). The laptop seems to have lost the connection to the phone.
Rebooting the phone using twrp restarts the phone, shows the logo for lineage but instead of opening the phone I get to the start boot screen which then takes me to twrp. The same happend if I switch it off and on.

Where did I go wrong?

I have never installed a rom using ADB because I like to be able to do everything on the phone without a PC. The most I ever do is run fastboot commands to unlock the phone and install TWRP.
So, I'm not going to help you with the ADB side of things.
And, given the issues you have, I suggest doing a clean install.
So:
1. what firmware are you currently on
2. is your phone encrypted
3. what rom and version are you installing

If you can get into TWRP, do a factory reset and then reboot your phone. Does it now boot normally or do you end up back in TWRP?

You mean going clicking wipe and then choosing slide to factory reset?
That results in phone booting lineage logo flashing for quite some followed by the OEM warning and then back to twrp.
I'm guessing I need to do some additional steps?

And, while you're in TWRP your PC can't see your phone? What happens when you type "adb devices" (assuming you've fixed up the Path variable in System settings).

I think it said no device detected or error something.

Yes the variables thing is sorted. That works correctly now.

It seem like the process has done something to the usb drivers as I think the laptop only sees my phone as android or did.

Did I do the factory reset correctly?

Yes, you did the factory reset correctly.

Do you have a copy of the rom you're installing on your phone? You can use the TWRP File Manager to browse /sdcard.

Do you mean a copy of the zip on my phone containing the ROM? Probably not as I tried to install the ROM from my laptop using adb and the sideload command. If the sideload command actually copies it across before unpacking, where is it located?

I'm surprised it all has gone this wrong as both the instal of the rom and gapps seems to have worked (the latter lookef like it worked when I repeated the sideload commands and unlocked the phone).

Is there any other way I can get back to oos 9.0.6 as this is my only phone and main connection to the outside world. I'm in lockdown here.

If you've never copied the rom file to your phone and you can't get your PC to talk to your phone then things are looking rather grim.

And there's no simple way to get back to OOS because you would need to flash the oos zip as you've already flashed Los.

But there's one last possibility I can't think of. If you can connect a USB drive to you phone then, in TWRP, you could use it to copy the rom file to your phone and then install it.

Otherwise, if you can't get ADB to work, you need to use an unbrick tool (I've never used one so I can't help).

No I didn't copy the zip across as the guide didn't advice that if you used adb. If i manager to get the phone to connect to the laptop, how do I flash the the oos ROM? Does it need to be saved somewhere specific on the phone or can it be copied anywhere and how do you flash it from the phone?

Flashing OOS is the same as flashing Los or any other rom.
Download the OOS zip from the OOS web site.
Obviously you don't need to flash Gapps as they come included in oos.

Do the need to go anywhere particular on the internal memory? I don't want to mess this up more by trying to flash it from the wrong place.

How do you actually flash in twrp? I haven't the foggiest.

Lol!
It doesn't matter where it goes on the sdcard. The top level (/sdcard) is fine.
Then in TWRP>install and then navigate to the location where you put the file and select the file.
It's all pretty straightforward.

Well after connecting the phone to my old laptop I was able to get both the zips on the phone. Flashing seemed to fine at first but now I've been stuck on the the just a sec after the language screen for plus 30 minutes. Not sure what to do now.

Glad you got ADB working again.
So, what exactly did you install on your phone?
Also, a factory reset won't hurt at this point and may fix your current problem. Fyi, a factory reset just clears the data of a rom. It doesn't affect the system partition or the data on sdcard.

I did it by flashing the zips using twrp and not on the phone. Installed lineage 16 with gapps. So boot into recovery and factory rest. Let's see how it goes
