Question Google play services causes apps to crash

So every now and again in Running services i see 3 instances and not the normal 2 instances of Google play services running, and while that 3rd instance is running EVERYTIME I open Gmail, Maps or basically any app that app crashes. I need to manually stop that 3rd instance of Google play services before apps will start working, what's going on? This has been happening across firmwares over months and months.
