O I like how they skated around the blue tint and graininess. Mine is fine but this is interesting

The muted colors and potential quick setting burn-in have been my concerns with the phone since getting it two days ago (although I don't notice the color issue unless I compare it to a different device). I have no grittiness to my display, and the blue tint on mine is battery noticable - requiring an exaggerated viewing angle for it to become apparent. The two year warranty, though, is great and is probably the deciding factor in me keeping the phone. This is great news.

I've been waiting for them to address the navigation button burn in since they switched to onscreen navigation buttons on Galaxy Nexus. Finally, I'm happy with that response and will wait for that update. Top notification area and navigation area needs more usage of white color to wear out those pixels.

In the 8.1 beta the navigation icons fade when not being used. This should probably help with any artifacts/burn in. Now if they used this same feature for the status bar...

Can anyone record a video or gif on how that's happening? Interested to see it but don't want to install the beta.

Wait.... So did I spend an extra 100 bucks on preferred care for nothing now??

I don't need "support". Bought it specifically for extended hardware coverage.

Or does the Google warranty only cover "manufacturer defect" and not accidental damage?

I believe preferred care covers user damage such as cracked screens (up to 2 claims). And pretty sure you can get a full refund within 30 days of purchase if you cancel the preferred care.

They followed up with another post on the blue tint:

We want to add some info regarding the blue tint that some of you have been asking about. The slight blue tint is inherent in the display hardware and only visible when you hold the screen at a sharp angle. All displays are susceptible to some level of color shift (e.g. red, yellow, blue) when viewing from off angles due to the pixel cavity design. Similar to our choice with a cooler white point, we went with what users tend to prefer and chose a design that shifts blue.

This is the part of the post I don't like and sounds fishy....

"The update will also reduce the maximum brightness of the Pixel 2 XL by a virtually imperceptible 50 cd/m2 (nits), thereby significantly reducing load on the screen with an almost undetectable change in the observed brightness. "

"virtually imperceptible 50 cd/m2 (nits)" & "almost undetectable change in the observed brightness."

Now I have read that the Pixel 2 XL's peak brightness right now is 483 nits, which is not that bright compared to some other flagship screens. If I remember correctly, some get to the mid to high 500's. Nevertheless, 50 nits is 10.35% of 483. Your telling me I'm not going to notice a 10% reduction in brightness????? I find that VERY VERY hard to believe. Also, if you have to reduce a screens specs to make it work properly, wouldn't you call that a defect. Isn't that like buy a car that's advertised having 483 horsepower but then after you bought it, we decided for the engine to work properly, we had to reduce your max horsepower to 433?

Am I missing something here because I haven't really heard anyone upset about this? I mean I don't really know anything about the unit "nits", as the number gets larger does the amount of perceived brightness become more and more negligible?

It honestly seems brighter to me. My screen wasn't bright at max brightness and now it hurts my eyes.
