The NFC transmits information from the secure element. They are both different chips within the phone. If the secure element breaks, NFC will still work, but you will not be able to use Google Wallet on the phone anymore.

The "Secure Element" works closely with the NFC Chip as a security feature. When it is tampered physically or with software (rooting and perhaps changing ROMS), it is set up to destroy itself. When it is destroyed, the only solution is to replace the phone. (Factory Data Reset, unrooted, and revert back to stock will not fix the problem).

Google Tech Support sends a typical email to owners who ends up having this error message:

"We strongly discourage gaining system-level "root" access to your phone if you plan to use Google Wallet. We are unable to support devices with unauthorized operating systems as the security layers of the device may be limited.

If you have other questions, please reply to this email and I'll be happy to help."

I hear it is about 50% hit and miss on rooted phones depending on what owners do with their phones. So, with that said, I would suggest you, as rooted owners stick with the SAME ROM all the way if you want to use Google Wallet. The Secure Element have only 1 life, not "9 lives". You are on your own discretion / risk.

Google will replace the Galaxy Nexus phones for free as long it is stock and not rooted.

Unlocked Galaxy Nexus phones are on sale via Google Play for $399, no contract.
Hi.

How do you know the Secure Element has broken? I rooted my GSM GNex a couple of weeks ago. I was able to use Google Wallet before that, but now I tried it the day before yesterday, I got the "Unsupported device" warning. I _was_ able to type in my password and "unlock" the wallet, but it did not work at the local American Eagle which is supposed to support Wallet. Is that an indication that Secure Element is broken? I did not reset Google Wallet before I rooted my phone.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to unroot/hide root in order to use wallet

Locked Out of Google Wallet, now it won't re-install

I installed Google Wallet a few months ago by replacing my T-Mobile SIM card with a AT&T SIM card. It worked great! It updated to ICS 4.04 with no problem and Wallet still worked fine until last week. I couldn't log in because it would not accept my pin. In order to "fix" this, I then uninstalled Wallet and attempted to re-install. Now I can't re-install because it now tells me "Your device isn't compatible with this version". My Nexus S is totally stock and not rooted. I've already done a "Factory data reset" but it didn't do any good. Please help if you can.

In Security settings, allow apps from outside the market, then go to this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365360
and install 1.1-R57v5 from there. I had to do this after I updated to 1.1-R63v12.

I've hit upon this issue now too, except in my case it had nothing to do with the phone ROM. I was completely stock, not even unlocked and the wallet app was in the process of updating (apparently) when I forced closed it because after 10 minutes of no activity I assumed it was just locked up. Now I've got the E1000 error. I think what happened is it was in the process of flashing something to the secure element when I interrupted it. A little more noticed would have been nice.

I have the same exact issue after the application was updating. I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this issue. I have been told that this phone will no longer work with Google Wallet and needs to be replaced. Have you found a resolution to this?
