Its NOT normal. It has always been possible to downgrade regardless of KNOX with an unlocked bootloader.
So called security updates that state that you will not be able to downgrade are bad, and usually mean one thing a bootloader update. Bootloader updates like this often lead to locked bootloaders, its happened before on Samsung devices. Locked bootloader means, no root, no custom recovery and no roms.

I'd stay away from this update until more is known about it. It may be possible to update without the bootloader.
it is normal, there is no downgrade the official way, that means through a Samsung center or using kies, then it is possible to do the manual way using nandroid or odin, but this is not the official way.

but since I don't even root my unit, it makes no differences..

I only had a quick look at the details which I recall is improving the battery life and other fixes and improvements.

My personal findings are improve battery life, faster, screen refresh rate is better, but not perfect and new icons.

I wasn't referring to kies.

I'm sitting on oh7 5.1.1 and the system tells me I have a update for j1 available. How do I delete the update and disable future attempts
You can disable the notification from the app details of the system update component. If you're rooted you can also freeze it and you won't get any notifications in future ;)

I'm new to the world of Galaxy devices having had only Nexus ones before so I'm trying to understand the Galaxy firmware update process.
I see on Sammobile that an update for my country is available. Yet when I check for OTA updates on my device, there are none available. Is this like the Nexus Android updates where they roll them out in waves and I just have to wait my turn? I notice that Samsung has a suite called Smart Switch (the new Kies?) which can among other things be used to update firmware. If a manual check for an OTA update through the device comes back negative, will checking through Smart Switch also be the same?
Essentially, what I'm asking is if there is any reason why I should install Smart Switch for firmware updates when they can simply be done OTA also?
Thanks.

they shoudl bring that tablet (their flagship) to Android 6.0.1. I was considering this tablet as of late, but ****, seem some of you still in 5.0.1 is a big no no. I much rather be on a ipad and jailbreak the hell out of it than keep supporting Samsung's behavior of of leaving devices in their FW they were released. No Nexus tablets are worth it either, too many issues. The Shield Tablet seems to be the better one of the bunch.

Complaining about "late" android updates is almost irrelevant nowadays. Only 1.2% of all android devices run marshmallow. Last month it was around 0.7%. Samsung Android updates usually occur around the time of the new galaxy s release every year for their main devices. It's not necessarily that their late updating devices, it's just that they have a different release schedule so they can integrate TouchWiz into android. The tab S2's version of Android is optimized for tablet use while stock Android is not and TouchWiz has more features compared to stock Android.

Companies have to take a bare bone operating system and integrate their features. This takes time to do. I doubt a stock marshmallow on the tab s2 would make for a better experience than the current lollipop software it uses now. It has too many useful features that stock doesn't have, and that's why it takes time.

Even if the marshmallow update is still a month or two away, I'd recommend you get this tablet if you were already considering it. You will not be disappointed. It's also on sale on amazon right now.

This is the main problem right here! People thinking is OK for Samsung to release updates whenever they feel like it, which is almost 2 years later, IF ANY. Android = Samsung since they sell more than 70% of all android flagship devices. I have the first Tab S still running 5.0.2. It is just a shame. No iPads is stuck in iOS 9 and seriously, we all know Samsung is Apple Wannabe, why cant they imitate Apple's update practices? If you think porting TW features/bloats is that hard, then Why is the LG G4/G3, a super bloated device already, receiving M? HTC/Moto are already doing the same. The Note 5 and S6 are barely getting a beta version. Who knows when the Note 4 and S5 are going to get updated. And I am not talking about a carrier branded version, their unlocked version are still running 5.1.

If we, as a consumers, keep supporting these OEM traits, we are always going to have vulnerable and a outdated OS vers in our devices when the competition are running the latest and greatest. This is the reason why I am refusing to buy their tablets even though they could be good enough for my needs. Same reason i refuse to buy the iPad mini 3, a new tablet running a 3 years old processor.

Even on 5.0.1 you will have the latest play store, the latest play services, etc etc etc... updates are not that critical anymore.

Also you have all the vulnerabilitys that were closed in AOSP since 5.0.2....
So of course updates are critical.
I don't want to have a vulnerable device, especially as the vulnerabilitys are well known.

ok. let's play your little rant game.

Since your signature claims you own an iphone 6, what version of jailbroken IOS do you have? Fact is, the LASTEST jailbroken ios is 9.0.x. There is NO jailbreak for 9.1 or 9.2.

You haven't been able to "jailbreak the hell out of" any recent IOS. Tough talk, but you're ignorant as the next apple fanboy.

Cut the crap and get out of this thread if you're so into apple devices.

Fact is, I was looking at the Apple Mini 4 until I found out the latest jailbreak version of IOS is only 9.0.x. So I ended up with a Samsung Tab S2. But I didn't realize Samsung had this KNOX system -- which makes it a very difficult choice for someone with a new Tab S2 to install custom recovery to root. It basically voids your warranty. I've held off on installing custom recovery because of this KNOX system. I paid for a new device; thus I want my warranty intact thank you!

Yes, Samsung does try to imitate Apple in many ways. But ultimately, Android is just a more superior OS. IOS is for kids and grandmas who don't know and don't want to know how to do technical things. Apple controls everything. It's made easier for the masses who don't know much about technical matters.

Samsung DOES need to push out newer releases of Android to its customer base. I would like to be on Marshmallow -- mostly for the better control of app permissions. Apple did one thing right, which was to allow the user to have much more precise control of what permissions are or are not allowed per individual app. Marshmallow finally allows that kind of control on Android.

CyangenMod 12.1 has had this precise permission control per individual app. Google finally implemented it in Marshmallow.

LOL Apple Fanboi!!! seriously, cut the name calling. Its a work iPhone, can't jailbreak it. But i used to be big on that **** when i owned apple devices. I have an apple's iPad, well my kids do, and its jailbroken. So I personally have been using Android since the S2, it was my first Android device and never looked back. I had the S2, S3, Nexus 4, S4, Nexus 5, LG G3, Note 4, Sony Xperia Z2 (used it for work alongside my Note 4, then had to get an iPhone cuz of work). Then upgraded to Nexus 6p. Had the Nexus 7 original tablet, iPad, iPad air 2, Galaxy Tab S (first gen). So yeah, I am an "Apple Fanboi" because I am speaking the truth.... I think the only fanboy here is you, oh wait, they call them Samsung KNIGHTS....Am i right?

Dude, admit it. S6 just got M today, some phones only. The T-mobile one is still on Samsung's ball park if you go and see the updated "Tmo Update" website... meaning you can't blame Tmobile for not pushing the update. The S5 got Lollipop 31 days later. While it's been over 130 days for M on the S6 only. I seriously feeling sorry for those who have the S5. They might never get Android M. This is not a rant, they are facts. Sammy craps on their customers. You buy a premium devices only to be treated like a $100 device later on.

And XDA is not only about samsung, android, or windows, is about everything. It is just that Apple owners do not visit it much because of people like you. Learn to accept other's opinion rather than calling them names. I, for one, love samsung devices, they are really good, but they need to stop their behavior of not updating old devices. Until then, i will refuse to buy it. I came to this thread hoping people are getting updates on their "unlocked, unbranded" tablets, but that is not the case.

That's so wrong my friend. All your data could be compromised by just visiting some website and your wife or kids clicking that big "Download" button. If you don't store personal data on your tablet (highly doubt it, as your google account might contain financial and other secret information) then you shouldn't care what OS you run. Every day there are new vulnerabilities found, and you are protected the most by having the latest update installed. Most Android OEMs that are guilty of not patching up their devices on time.

Playstore and Google updates are just that, Google updates and making sure the Google framework is patched and offer new functionality. Yes, somethings can be patched through the Google Play Services, others can't... take as an example Stagefright.

How come so many people here are still on 5.0.2 but Tab S2 sm-t810 I bought this week from best buy came with 5.1.1 out of the box? Even sammobile reports 5.0.2 as latest firmware for this particular model.
