I'm not sure if this is significant or not, but seems maybe related to the MyTracks poor tracking.

I noticed that the route line on the maps when I am navigating runs a bit off the road often. Now, the route line has nothing to do with where we are at any given time.

I even changed the view to Satellite, and sure enough, when I zoomed in on that, it too had me on wrong side of road, or off the road, like on the right shoulder, etc.

That's really the same problems I've seen in MyTracks when I use it.

Seems too coincidental to me to not be significant to that problem.

I am at the point that the only thing I really care about is if it keeps me on teh right road or not. With the Jupiter6 changes, I pretty much accomplish that; and with CoPilot, I never am on the wrong road.

Keeping an eye on this thread though.

As long as the program keeps you on the right place even if its assuming, it sohuld be usable.
My bro has a hacked GPS and he used a program on it similar to My Tracks and even his dedicated GPS will show him going on the opposite side of the road some times but the software is designed to "correct" those errors and the user never knows that it happened.

Hey guys, just thought I'd add my 2 cents of info to this thread.

Since I got my second captivate (swapped it when i found the 3-button combo didn't work when I was still under my 30-day warranty), the GPS has been perfect at all times. I get locks within seconds when outside, 10-15 seconds when inside (when using foursquare, etc).

A while ago I ran some MyTracks recordings... they seem really good imo. This was taken with the phone in my backpack while I was on a motorcycle.

I was in a friend's car the other day in the backseat and had google maps running-- it also looked great still.

The only "unique" thing compared to probably everyone else in this thread is that my phone is 100% stock-- no rooting, loading a new ROM/kernel, no lag-fix, no GPS fixes... nothing. The only stuff on my phone are apps from the market.

Test tracK #1 (weird **** at the end is from driving in a 6-story parking garage)

Test track #2 (shorter, but just testing it driving at slower speeds)

I just recently received a new Captivate today through the ATT insurance program that came preloaded with the JH7 Eclair build. The first feature that I was anxious about testing was the GPS since myself and others on this forum seemed to experience difficulty applying the OTA update from ATT. I drove an estimated 20 miles in the city and 15 miles on highway and noticed that I no longer experienced lag when making turns, or when I came to a complete stop and the navigation icon never jumped to adjacent streets or went over a 10m accuracy. I also was able to get a lock in 3-5 seconds while going 70MPH during my highway drive. When I returned home I rooted my phone and made a Nandroid backup and proceeded to flash cognition 2.4.1. Once I did this I decided to test the GPS again with a custom ROM installed and noticed that the GPS issues that I had previously experienced with my old phone were present once again. So after I tested the GPS on Cognition, I decided to restore to my original firmware and the GPS accuracy was restored to the favorable results as previously mentioned. What I am asking the community as well as the devlopers at XDA is if I provide you with my Nandroid backup files, would this be helpful in solving the GPS issues once and for all? I am just uncertain if maybe newer phones that came preloaded with JH7 may have different GPS settings than the OTA updates.

If the developers would like my Nandroid backup please just ask and I will upload.

UPDATE*

Here is the image file of the stock JH7 that has given me VERY accurate GPS results from the previous stated post. This is from a Nandroid backup and I do not know how you would go about installing this but I'm sure someone from here does and will test it. This has not been tested yet, but I respectfully challenge the developers and community to try this out to see if it is an improvement. This is an Eclair JH7 rom. Thank you for your time.

UPDATE 2**

I went on about a 30 minute trip and here are my results

** Please note you will need to zoom in to notice all of the turns that I made. I also made a U-turn and traveled on some of the same roads in opposite directions. Everything is just as accurate as the day before.

UPDATE 3***

I would like to extend my thanks to mattbeau for trying this out and posting his results. The results furthermore prove my hypothesis and are consistent with my results. I requested mattbeau to post detailed instructions on how to flash it so others can try. Please I encourage others to give this a try the more tests we gather the easier it will be for the Developers to find what makes this different.

UPDATE 4****

Very special thank to mattbeau for posting instructions on how to get this to work. Still need a few more people to test this but so far this is the most accurate the GPS has ever been on the Captivate here it is:

extract with winrar or what ever you want

so this is what is working for me.
ensure the clockwork update.zip is insalled on the root of your internal SD card
create a folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/jh7gps/
copy system.img and nandroid.md5 to the above folder
Oneclick back to JF6
enable debugging under settings
using adb
adb restart recovery
select reinstall packages
(it will install teh clockwork recovery)
again select reinstall packages
select advanced restore
select jh7gps
select restore system
select yes
your phone will reboot with the new system.img installed

baseband is still jf6

If I could as that everyone that tries this please post their results. The more consistent this is the more things we can rule out.

UPDATE 5*****

I apologize that the megauploads links it temporarily unavailable. We are currently working on getting this back up as soon as possible. Also will be posting my My Tracks for day 3 shortly as well. I encourage anyone else to post their results as well.

Here is mattbeau's link that was originally on megauploads. Since some of you were having problems I moved it to here:

Let me know how this works out. I thank all of you for your assistance.

UPDATE 6******

Here is the My Tracks for the third day of testing. GPS accuracy does not appear to be deteriorating and have consistent results from previous tracks. This is looking more and more promising by the day. Comments are welcome!

Thank you mattbeau for your thorough comparison to other JH7 ROMs. Please keep us all posted on your findings.
What are the settings in lbstestmode for this specific phone that was using the JH7 Firmware? I've got a buddy who has a captivate and we cannot seem to get the GPS working. We've rooted it, installed cognition, reverted back to stock, updated to JH7....still to no avail. We then got a replacement captivate from AT&T (JH7) but it was the same story. We changed the positioning server to supl.nokia.com, port 7275, "network based" and that helped, but it still wasn't perfect. Since changing these settings around did help, that leads us to think it may not be a hardware issue but just that the right settings need to be entered into the lbstestmode options...

Are there any other positioning servers that may work better? So far I'm aware of:

1. Automatic Configuration
h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gppnetwork.org
??????port?????
terrible gps

2. supl.google.com
port 7276
works ok

3. supl.nokia.com
port 7275
(has to be in "Network" with this one)
works best, but still not perfect

It's just f'ing flaky.

I have, right now, 8 sat locks in my living room. I normally have jack ****.

I can go outside in my vehicle (and I did just 5 minutes ago - with the storm cover that's over Baton Rouge right now - 1Feb11) and only got 6 locks.

None are over 24 dBHZ. When I'm driving, most times I can't even get a lock for 3-5 minutes.

Yet, when I'm sitting in my apartment, it usually shows me w/i 5 yards of where I'm sitting.

I'm flashing latest Cognition w/i a week, so I'll post if something changes, but I think it's just a matter of GPS luck. My Magellan unit has NEVER failed to get a lock here, or misguide me.

Update - SUPL settings are:
www_spirent-lcs_com
7275
ON
SUPL

App settings:
Tracking
S/w Test
Standalone
Hot start
ON
ON
Acc: 50
Use SkyHook - OFF
Use PC Tool - OFF

Screw it - it's too damned cold out there.

I switched to MS Assisted and turned SkyHook ON, got 8 sat locks - 4 at 35+ dBHZ and 1 at 40 exactly.

Now I have ZERO locks in apartment...
