General Green tint on OLED

Search This thread
I'm probably one of the few people who has their 10 iii already since it just arrived yesterday, but on my first day I noticed a green bias in the colour. I was able to correct that with temperature setting (going high with blue and medium with red and leaving green at 0) but when the brightness was lower at night I noticed a green tint and the contrast was a bit washed out. When the brightness was set all the way to 0 the screen was completely washed out.

I don't noticed it today, but I'll take another look tonight in the dark.

Just something to look out for if you're shopping for this phone.

Probably just your phone is faulty, just claim warranty

Agree, not just banding and colour tint, but also black level. It looks like the pixels never really truly turn off.

Contrast improves at higher brightness, but still no Oled blacks, it's more like a high quality IPS panel.

Holding all data transfer and actively watching this thread. Quite a shame, I was so hyped and jumped by instinct.

Take care you guys.

Okay, I'm back. In my way of testing...
Drag all sliders max min and shock the system lol. It seems this is just a software bug.

The display controller has some glitchy work.

Set a black wallpaper, sit in a dark room. Try being wild with the sliders and then return to normalcy.

You will see the bezels fade away to oblivion. Dark like it's off. The grey cast will reappear sometimes on unlocking the phone.

Let me know if you wanna see my settings.

Hey thanks for posting that link.

The App does work. But much like changing other settings...it reverted back to trash after unlocking.

I just hope this is fixable via SW, it's not like the panel can never show its "true colours". We just have temporary workarounds. I hope there is a permanent SW fix.

I have the same Problem, got mine in Germany this Friday.
Black seems never to get really black, also at max brightness it seems not really black like i know from my old phone (but better then on low). In minimum brightness then there ist terrible image. Black is definetly not black and in a movie with black or dark content, everything turn pixelated an green, its impossible to watch a movie. It looks lke watching a movie dowloaded illegaly with super low resolution. Tried with LUPIN on Netflix. In dark scene impossible to wahch. Also sample movies on Youtube. Looks like the image posted upsite.

Edit: @ R+x can you show your setting?

  • You wanna go to display settings, drive it to Max brightness. Be wild here, go min max real fast and settle finally at max. Then quickly toggle between the display modes. Fast tap on Colour boost multiple times. It worked for me.
  • Opening the camera app also helps. It's one of the few areas where the interface is pitch dark.
Both work only till you keep the display above 75% and till you the phone remains unlocked.

This appears to be a a software or firmware issue, rather than faulty hardware. I can consistently and reliably "fix" this (until the next time I lock/unlock the screen) by launching an app from the whitelist in
Code:
com.sonymobile.displaybooster
while the screen's brightness is set to maximum and either having your color gamut set to "Original mode" or having the "Video image optimization" option set to enabled.
This is a bit of a dense statement, so let me rephrase.
Each time you turn on the screen, you'll get the green tint. To get rid of it, you should go into the display color gamut settings and either choose the "Original mode" or enable "Video image optimization" (this only has to be done once).
With this config in place, you can fix the green tint by setting your brightness to maximum and launching an app from the list, and that's it - after this trick you'll get perfect display quality even at the lowest brightness setting.

For reference, here's the whitelist:

In my experience, com.sonyericsson.album works best because it exposes the activity
com.sonyericsson.album.video.player.PlayerActivity which is convenient because it plays a video and then exits immediately. So I've implemented a hacky workaround in Termux which basically boils down to cranking the brightness up to maximum, opening a very short video which consists of a single black frame using said activity and then setting the brightness back to normal. Termux then allows you to add such a script to your home screen, which means now you just have to tap the icon after unlocking your phone to fix the display.
Here's the script:
Bash:
#!/data/data/com.termux/files/usr/bin/bash
termux-brightness 255 && sleep 0.5s &&  am start --activity-exclude-from-recents -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d /storage/emulated/0/Download/vid.mp4 com.sonyericsson.album/.video.player.PlayerActivity && termux-brightness auto
(Replace the path to the video file with a path to a suitable video file, I'll attach mine to this post for convenience)

Hopefully a real fix is delivered by Sony in the next firmware update.

Tried with the YouTube App.. It works like you described. I opened YouTube. Set max brightness, than back to lowest and everything gets black. After its black you can also change Image Mode. It stays so still you Lock/unlock Screen.. but activating black Screen possibile only with originale Mode or with activated Video optimization. Thanks.

Could you tell me how to do this? I don't really do anything like this on my phone, but I'd like to try it as a workaround that is more native than using OLED Saver
Here's a guide: https://wiki.termux.com/wiki/Termux:Widget
So basically save the script under $HOME/.shortcuts/tasks and add a Termux widget to your home screen. The file name determines what the home screen shortcut will be labeled as. I named mine "Display fix".
If you need further guidance, just ask.

    I'm still not entirely convinced that the issue doesn't occur in some units. I get the feeling that some people just don't notice it. Given how widespread the issue appears to be, and considering some people have replaced their devices and saw no improvement at all.
    Sorry to bother you @patqqk but could you please go to a completely dark room with your phone and visit https://www.lightbleedtest.com/ just to make really sure? After you tap "Click Here", you should no longer be able to see the screen, like *at all*, regardless of the screen brightness set. Can you confirm that's the case?
    And while at it, does your phone also say "HQ-BT52" on the back? Thank you.

    The unaffected user from Sony communtity replied to this test - "Mine is, indeed, completely black and cannot be seen."

    No changes, black is as it should for me. It says "HQ-BT52", system info says "XQ-BT52".
    The longer I use the phone I'm starting to notice a different quirk, while in low light conditions and with pure black wallpaper instead of going green screen looks like it's trying to boost the contrast ( I guess that's what that is for lack of better word).

    No matter wether I use original or standard mode colors seem to get more vibrant but also somewhat bleed into one another, which also gets fixed by the "brightness trick" one of you guys figured.
    When browsing through settings now and then as a proud insomniac in the ui/dev options I can notice the color of the ui backround itself shifting slightly but had no issue with black not being black.

    The things I was the most worried about before getting my 10III were:

    "green tint issue" many ppl expirience with various intensity as it appears
    camera* quality, which turned out to be quite nice I'd say, coming from mi9t/redmi k20 (gcam* not the stock one)
    that it'll throttle running TFT/Hearthstone and struggle while in split screen and to my surprise and relief it's great

    If need be feel free to ask for any info that you guys think might help u resolve the infamous green tint thing.

    com.sonymobile.displaybooster
    From what you described, it seems that this app changes the screen settings for all apps except the whitelisted ones. So it might actually be the one that causes the problem. I wonder if deleting it will fix this.
    I don't own this device, so someone should try, I think it worth a shot. You can delete and then reinstall it thorough adb, no root needed. Google "android uninstall apps though adb". Don't forget to reboot.

    Bash:
    #!/data/data/com.termux/files/usr/bin/bash
    termux-brightness 255 && sleep 0.5s &&  am start --activity-exclude-from-recents -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d /storage/emulated/0/Download/vid.mp4 com.sonyericsson.album/.video.player.PlayerActivity && termux-brightness auto
    (Replace the path to the video file with a path to a suitable video file, I'll attach mine to this post for convenience)

    Hopefully a real fix is delivered by Sony in the next firmware update.

    Updated to 62.0.A.3.70 today and the issue still exists, unfortunately. It does look a bit better than it did on 62.0.A.3.28, though. Anyways, the workaround I provided earlier still works. I may make a dedicated app which will carry out the workaround in a more reliable and user friendly way. I was held back by the upcoming update, but since that didn't fix it...

    If I don't have the "album" com.sonyericsson.album app installed, where can I get it?

    Also, I made a series of images detailing the problem, maybe anybody finds it useful:

    I've got it from APKMirror. You can also find it attached to this post.

    62.0.A.3.109 is out, does it fix it or not?

    Just isntalled this update and it didn't fix anything, green tint issue is still there. Btw the temporary workaround / fix with setting brightness up and down still works as well...
