Re: [GUIDE] Update/Recovery/Root Android 4.2.1 on Unlocked Devices

Probably not. Unlike many Android handsets and tablets, there does not appear to be a way to "flash" a recovery via the bootloader (for instance with a Rezound you can create a PH98IMG.ZIP file to flash in bootloader that can update kernels, splash screens, and recoveries, so you don't need to be connected to a PC as long as you can get the files on the handset). On the Transformer, it appears that flashing a custom recovery requires fastboot.
Ah ok yea had many in passed where that was possible usually was an htc but was just putting it out there. Asus is a good device love it but seem to have it buttoned up pretty good besides letting us unl0ck the bootloader unless being able to use fastboot. Wont be a problem in couple weeks will have access to a pc but just hoping. Sort of held off on asking because on how new the update was just monitoring to see if something popped up. Thanks for info though. Jusst gonna have to try to get access to a pc then.

There where a lot of issues regarding Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and hdmi regarding Android 4.2.1 that were fixed on 4.2.2. But I think Asus got over them. Please try to fix permissions and see if Bluetooth works. I don't have my tablet with me at the moment and I didn't test my Bluetooth yet

What should the permissions be?

So the ultimate answer is yes you can use the terminal, but not in this case because you will have lost root, so flash tarp with fastboot then flash root using twrp.

you are correct. you must use a computer to obtain SU. after that just make sure that you INSTALL THE PATCHED VERSION OF TWRP, which can be found in the OP. It is #3 under INSTALLING TWRP RECOVERY

Theres a fix permission setting in twrp under advanced I believe. It's not literally fixing root permission or anything like that :p

Could you, or someone, advise exactly what permissions it fixes? I have everything working, just curious if this would be more of an improvement.

If everything is working, I wouldn't fix permissions. But if you want to know, just Google search :p
To be honest, I don't exactly know either lol.

boot into TWRP recovery, select advanced, fix permissions, then reboot.

Duh... I should've remembered to do that from my time rooting and flashing my old droid2. ;) Thanks for the reminder.
So I did that, but my tablet still doesn't see my ps3 controller. It works fine plugged in, but no wireless connectivity.

Since I'm rooted, decided to go with sixaxis app. Now I have wireless again, yeah.

TWRP recovery is not recognizing my sd card. Any thoughts?

you gotta mount external storage and then change it so that you are looking at external storage, not internal. TWRP should have no problem reading external storage. At least I had no problem.

Every worked fine after upgrade, installed custom recovery, root. Only a few apps stop working because of Link2SD I'm guessing. Only needed to re-install and now everything is fine. Very nice updates. Thanks!

So I've tried that, but it keeps jumping back to internal storage. Log says "failure to mount"

Your not alone here dymndback, I have the same issue with external sd not mounting. It will mount fine in andoid and on pc.

I have been looking into it but no luck yet.

Thanks

I am one of those people who downloaded the OTA to 4.2.1 and then tried to root... the V7 unlocker worked for me but I couldn't install a recovery that could read the internal storage.

Anyway, your patched twrp.blob is exactly what I needed, after that I was able to install root and all is well with the world. Thanks. :good:

Hello all,

I am currently running Hydro Rom with twrp 2.4.3.0, I would like to update to 4.2.1 and I am little confused on the method 3.
Can I flash directly with my actual twrp 2.4.3.0 or should I update it before to 2.4.4.0 JB and reinstall it again after flashing 4.2.1 ?

Thank you for your help !!
---------------------------------

ok just updated to twrp 2.4.4.0 JB before => flash zip => as I performed a factory reset it says no OS installed => nevermind reboot and now it's ok 4.2.1 :)

So?

Hi everybody!

So I am no running the 4.2.1 update so the new bootloader too... Here is my question if I follow the process described here and flash twrp I should have a working recovery. But then can I just flash cm10.1? The bootloader won't be change ? So will it be possible to use the recovery integrated in cm10.1 kernel?

Thanks for your answers!

As far as I know, cm uses 4.1 bootloader so I think you'll soft brick your tablet when flashing cm while having 4.2 bootloader.
