I'm stuck.

I can get to the fastboot screen on the phone.
I hit the power button (BOOTLOADER) and it changes to HBOOT USB PLUG.
I then hit FASTBOOT.
And then scroll down to REBOOT BOOTLOADER.

After all of that I still see S-Off

No - I thought that it had to be S-On Locked before I did that???

And how do I run RUU? I have it downloaded but wasn't sure how I was going to run it.

I would Re-read the OP. Then do the whole process over. The RUU you run from the Desktop via USB. You can run the RUU in normal mode, or in Fastboot USB.

I've gone through the steps again and I'm still missing something.

When I cmd my way to "adb reboot bootloader" I can see that I'm in "fastboot use" mode. From here my options are...

Bootloader
Reboot
Reboot Bootloader
Power Down

I have hboot_0.99.0000.img in my Platform-Tools folder but I'm not sure how to flash it.

When I select Bootloader it looks likes it's flashing and then the screen changes to "Hboot USB Plug" and the options are...

Fastboot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Simlock
System Info
Image Crc

What should I select here?

Now that I've typed that out "Image Crc" seems like the obvious choice. Not sure why I didn't see that before.

I went ahead and flashed Hboot and Rebooted Bootloader but I still have S-Off.

Are the instructions not detailed?

What would happen if I just run the RUU? I'm not returning my phone to Sprint. I'm just selling it to a friend.

I did install everything (just recently rooted the phone)

I currently have the cmd prompts pointed towards my Platform-Tools folder where hboot_0.99.0000.img is sitting.

Typing fastboot flash hboot hboot_0.99.0000.img into the prompt returns "fastboot" is not recognized as an internal or external command

And can I just run the RUU and leave it rooted? Like I said, I'm just selling it to a friend.
No need to double post. Obviously you've never used adb or fastboot before. How did you root your shift in the first place? If you can't figure it out then this guide isn't for you.

It's certainly not something I deal with very often.

I used this thread to originally root the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357157

If this thread isn't the right place for me to find answers then please point me towards another thread that might be better.
You should already know how to use fastboot then. Unless you forgot how to use it? Read the first post all the instructions there are detailed and correct.

I'm sure if you Re-read the OP, and take your time it'll all go well. Also you mentioned you used VICODN's method to Root the Device originally. Would you happen to still have the shift-rootkit.rar file? There are several members looking for it. So if you have it could you please upload it? I will mirror a link if you would like after you Upload it.

I went ahead and just ran the RUU and it's back to factory. Since someone will buying it used I don't foresee any issues.

I do have the shift-rootkit.rar Where should I upload it????

I talked to Vicodan there was a issue with goo.im awhile back that wiped everyone's files. I think he's working on uploading it again.

You can just send me a link to the zip file by PM, or Upload it in VICODAN's thread.

Running the RUU gives me this:

Error 170: USB Connection Error
The ROM Update Utility cannot connect to your android phone..

Drivers are installed, HBOOT is installed. Followed directions in OP to the letter.

I tried rebooting the phone, battery pull, etc.

Even tried two different USB cables and different ports.

anyone have any ideas? thanks!

Edit: Tried this on a different PC and it seems to be working. Odd.

May have to reinstall drivers on my laptop and see if that works.

It may be the Anti-Virus program your using on the Laptop. Or possibly the Firewall settings. I've run across the issue where it interferes with the Program running. Still not sure why.
