I found a way around the annoying "Error 402" when trying to apply a 3rd party/non theme store theme!

Steps I used for success:
1) Root with Magisk.
2) Download Root Explorer or a root file manager of your choice.
3) With Root Explorer mount system R/W, go to /system/build.prop, open build.prop in text editor, and change ro.build.type=user to ro.build.type=userdebug
4) Now download Miui Theme Editor and import 3rd party theme, save, and install.
5) Open theme app and apply theme with no errors.

Good luck!

Or install MIUI under Android 8 and there no trouble to apply theme of third party

I had read you can't apply third party themes unless you are a theme developer. I setup a theme developer account and was still not able to apply third party themes. I'm not sure about your situation but I wasn't able to use third party themes on China 8.0 alpha or Global 8.0 beta(8.1.11) even with Miui Theme Editor without the above method.

I'm xiaomi designer and on Miui 9 it was impossible to install a third party theme even with MIUI Theme Editor, they have established a new politic wich forbid all third party theme. But i'm beta tester and i don't know why but we've got update 8.1.11 Global dev beta and on this update we can apply all theme ;)

not working :(

Hey!
I tried your method.
When applying a theme it says "Unable to connect to network" so themes application needs an internet connection to verify.
With internet on, it just says same error (maybe different code): auth rejected -99.
Can you help me please?

Im on Global Beta 8.3.1, mi5.

Is it possible that u would need to submit ur theme to Xioami 1st then they publish it through theme store? Then we download it from theme store and that's the time it works.

Sorry, I'm na noob here at xda as well as with our device.

Does Substratum not work? Since it's running Oreo, it should work.
