...i also made a version of D5503_14.3.A.0.757_EURO LTE.ftf that i like and use. however, i didn't upload it because i thought sony would release an update after just a few weeks like they did with 681 and 757...
if you are interested in that version let me know and i'll upload it.
thanks for the offer, yes I might try it to see if my corporate Contacts/Calendar sync issue would still exist. They are breaking on KK for some reason - probably not a fault of Z1C ROMs (the same was happening on HD2). Not immediately as all working very nice, but I might test it in free time during a weekend :) .

I have the phone rooted and also Philz touch 6.0.4? Could a backup done with philz be restored if I mess up the update to 757 firmware? Would it put my phone in exactly the same state as when the backup is made. Reading here I saw that some people had problems restoring?

Generally, yes that's what the backup is meant for. But I made a backup on Philz and it gave me an error on restoring data partition so I advise you not to use Philz for backup.

Restart from the guide.

is flashing the stock rom (ftf) via flashtool enough for the unroot and stock recovery?
Yes.

You can for example use TWRP recovery. If you're using dualrecovery, you can boot into TWRP by holding Volume Down (instead of Up).

followed the video guide and got a brand new 757 rooted firmware.
There was a contradiction between the video and the audio and the overlaid instructions
at 4:28 the C6903 file downloaded from the link from video did not have any entries whatsoever in Wipe window so I could not untick anything, flashed it anyway.
at 2:26 the caption says z1c 44 uk flashable but on the screen you can see z1c 44-14....757 uk flashablezip. being copied to the sd card. I had a copy of 757 from somewhere else so I flashed that not z1c44 uk.

I successfully rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CM11 after following this excellent guide, but now have a hardware fault (microphone is broken) so I have to and back to Sony for repair. Coming from CM11 does anyone know what I have to do to relock the bootloader? As far as I know I need to reinstall A pure stock kernal and ROM but I don't know where to get them from for a UK Z1C. Please help

Have you tried restoring from a TWRP backup?

Yes, it worked perfectly. Somehow I lost my content on internal sd card (photos, videos), not sure if that's related though.

I advise you to upgrade to a rooted stock firmware following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2688933
It's best to take the same firmware as you made the TA backup (e.g. if you used 4.3 to take TA backup, flash 4.3 now). Then restore the TA backup with the program Backup TA to lock your bootloader.

Thanks for helping me out with this but following that link just makes me even more confused (because it has links within links and I am a total noob when it comes to flashing phones). I went to this link because I have an unlocked bootloader with CM11 on it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51254652&postcount=3

I came from official UK 4.4 kitkat kernal so which ftf rooted stock firmware do I download and flash? And which Custom kernel with recovery do I install if I want to relock the bootloader?

Again, thanks in advance

1. Download and flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722816 (check wipe everything)
2. Flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2620794
3. Flash SuperSU in recovery
4. Boot phone and enable USB debugging + unknown sources
5. Open Backup TA on your computer and restore your TA backup.
6. Flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722816 again (check wipe everything)
7. Should be done, stock rom + bootloader locked (see 'Questions' how to check) + no root
